Under Marion County's New Solutions Program I served as a freelance Youth Mentor, Workshop Instructor for the Missions Transitions Program, and in Fall 2011 I was able to serve as an intern for New Solutions.As a Youth Mentor I engaged with emotionally and behaviorally challenged youth in activities in the community. The purpose of a mentor is to help children and teens build character and achieve maximum development through positive and sustainable relationships. In addition, as a mentor you work with care coordinators and the youth's family to create a support system that helps both the family and the youth grow together. A mentor can mean the difference between an at-risk youth entering the juvenile corrections system and that youth going to college.For my workshops I taught youth that are in the process of preparing to transfer out of foster care about basic banking and finance principles. I educated the youth on checking and savings accounts, applying for college and financial aid, building credit, as well as basic budgeting and investments. In addition, I created original activities that allowed the youth to learn the concepts in a fun and interesting way.As an intern with New Solutions I designed, researched, and created two handbooks as part of my internship. One to aid mentors engaged in one-on-one mentoring with evidence based practices for successful mentoring. And another to provide emotionally challenged youth with coping strategies that they can easily reference and understand. As a final project during my internship I created a recruiting presentation for New Solutions to use when they visit college campuses to recruit for mentors and employees.
