Global Markets Executive - Banking & Financial Services

I led IBM and Kyndryl engagements with Major Australian Banks and had a particular focus on Business & Private Banking, Corporate & Institutional Banking and Risk. My team ensured that our clients had access to the latest innovations in Cloud Platforms, Data and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Digital Business Models. I had a particular interest in Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain and their potential to change business models and radically improve efficiency, the customer experience, risk management and compliance. The key focus for my role was to leverage my senior banking leadership experience to engage effectively with Group Executives and Executive General Managers. This engagement was aimed at understanding our client's challenges and strategic opportunities and to align IBM’s global capabilities to support and enable them to respond effectively to the challenges and to realise the opportunities.

Nov 2015 - Jan 2022

Non Executive Director

Brisbane, Qld, Au

Under its constitution the Board of MOVE Bank was enabled to appoint an external independent Director for a one-off fixed term of 1 year. My appointment to the Board was designed to bring specific banking expertise, particularly in relation to risk management, to enable MOVE to respond to the findings of the Banking Royal Commission and to prepare effectively for the implementation of the Banking Executive Accountability Regime. During my term I was also a member of the Risk Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

May 2018 - May 2019

Non Executive Director

Kensington, Victoria, Au

Nov 2015 - Jul 2017

Head Of Corporate And Commercial Banking

Melbourne, Victoria, Au

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board I was a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and was responsible for leading a team of 12 direct reports and a broader team of around 300. The business faced challenges in relation to growth, asset quality and market place differentiation. The key challenge was to effectively reset the cultural, risk management and growth settings of the business. This required revamping the leadership team and restructuring the business to focus on key industry segments by developing an unwavering focus on the needs of our customers and the prudent and deliberate management of risk. During this period I Chaired the Executive Credit Committee and the Asian Business Advisory Board.

Oct 2013 - Nov 2015

Managing Director

Melbourne, Au

In early 2012 I established Mindbank Australia as a boutique consulting practice. It delivered programmes and advice in the domains of Credit Risk, Leadership Development and Franchise System Accreditation and Funding. Major clients have included the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and Budget Direct Insurance in the financial services sector and Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses, Mr Rental and Quest Apartments in the franchising sector. Mindbank Australia continues to operate on a pro bono basis with all consulting fees donated to Melbourne City Mission.

Apr 2012 - Oct 2013

Chief Credit Officer

Newstead, Qld, Au

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer I led a team of 7 direct reports and a broader team of 150 credit risk professionals across Australia and New Zealand. The focus of this role was to improve the quality of BOQ’s $35 billion balance sheet which had been adversely affected by both significant flooding events in Queensland in 2010/2011 and the Global Financial Crisis. I was responsible for overseeing the identification and articulation of all credit related risks to the balance sheet and for developing and implementing new policy approaches that would optimise the risk-reward equation and support prudent asset growth. In addition, I was also responsible for managing BOQ’s relationships with APRA, ASIC, mortgage insurers and the external ratings agencies in relation to credit risk and BOQ’s Basel II programme. During this period I Chaired the Executive Credit Committee and the Credit Policy Committee.

May 2011 - Apr 2012

General Manager Business Banking

Newstead, Qld, Au

Reporting to the Group Executive Banking, I led a team of 11 direct reports and a broader team of 350 people across 13 Business Banking centres. The business had assets of $10 billion and revenue of $185 million. In addition to Business Banking relationship teams the business included specialist units in Trade Finance, Debtor Finance, Equipment Finance, Property Finance and Corporate Banking as well as contact and fulfilment centres.Due to the impacts of the GFC BOQ faced both closed securitisation markets and a rising cost of funds. There was a strategic imperative to support the bank’s unique Owner Managed branch network which was a key differentiator for BOQ in terms of both the cost-to-income ratio and customer centricity. The leadership challenge was to develop and implement a strategy that would deliver prudent growth in business banking assets and revenue whilst contributing to the maintenance of BOQs industry leading cost-to-income ratio. In parallel, I also needed to support the financial health and viability of the Owner Managed network. Ultimately this led to work force centralisation, where it made sense, and to the development of distribution strategies that leveraged both third parties and the Owner Managed network. The implementation of this strategy saw growth in business banking assets to $11 Billion and liabilities to $5 Billion by May 2011. The resultant revenue growth was in excess 8% per annum by May 2011.

Apr 2009 - May 2011

State Manager Business Banking Queensland

Newstead, Qld, Au

I established a full business banking capability across metropolitan and regional Queensland consisting of 10 business banking centres and specialist support centres. By March 2009 the business had grown to $7 billion in assets and $3 billion in liabilities. Total revenue also grew to some $145 million in the same period.

Jan 2008 - Apr 2009

Regional Manager Business And Consumer Banking

Newstead, Qld, Au

I joined Bank of Queensland in April 2003 with the express objective of developing a Business Banking capability. At that point Bank of Queensland had some rudimentary offerings which had resulted in an assets base of about $ 300 million being developed. This role entailed the building of a business from scratch including the recruitment of suitably qualified staff, the location of premises for business banking centres and the negotiation of leases. In addition, the development of products, procedures and training courses was also required. Ultimately, this led to the growth of business assets from $ 300 million, to approximately $ 3 billion over a 4 year period. During this period, I also had responsibility for a branch network of up to 30 branches. In recognition of these achievements I was recognised by the Chief Executive Officer as “People Leader of The Year 2007”.
