My first business was running the clubhouses for local cricket clubs in Cape Town, South Africa. It was like Uber for bartenders... if you needed to staff a bar, I was the guy you called. I was 20 years old and didn’t even realize I had a business; I saw it as a way for me to earn money while I surfed and hung out with friends, while my bartenders were working as students paying for their college education. Since then, I’ve worked for the largest telecommunications company in the world, analyzed transactions for Central Europe, Middle East and African credit card transactions in the year that VISA processed over a $trillion USD in transactions. I have learned the ins and outs of FMCG, launched, ran and sold a restaurant, and remember starting in this industry when people were just beginning to call it “E-commerce”. It has been a diverse, valuable experience thus far, and now with AI, Blockchain, Social Media, and an entire shift in in how we as modern humans exist on this planet, I am excited to be at the forefront of technical innovation for the betterment of all. Running a business today constantly reminds me of running the bar at the cricket club - right place, right time, right attitude, right energy; focus on people first, especially family. If you don’t have culture, you’re toast.
