Schlieren images are photographs of density gradients. This technique can be used to visualize strong density gradients in a flow. For propulsion of high-speed vehicles, scramjets promise significant economic advantages over rockets. The flow structure in the combustor of a scramjet is flow featuring a high-density gradient. In the combustor of the scramjet, fuel is injected and ignited into a supersonic flow. Efficient mixing of fuel and air is essential for producing maximum thrust. An Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser(VCSEL), is an powerful, relatively cheap and narrow pulse width light source with the potential to produce high quality Schlieren images. In my master thesis, I used a compact light source consisting of many VCSELs to produce schlieren images of a cascaded injection system for a scramjet. By measuring the penetration height of the injected air an improvement in mixing for cascaded dual injection was demonstrated. Part of the Master thesis was presented at 27th of May 2019 at the 15th International Conference on Fluid Control, Measurements and Visualization, FLUIDCOME 2019. We are currently preparing a more detailed AIAA-paper of this research. For this goal, I am currently employed by the University of Twente until the paper is finished.
