ICENS lab is a new initiative that I recently set up in the form of a non profit organisation. The Interdisciplinary Climate Economics for Nature and Society (ICENS) lab aims to foster transformative thinking and practice, towards a future of justice and sustainability. The innovative side or added value of ICENS lab lies in its work ethics approach that pursues, in addition to multi-stakeholder engagement, two under-explored angles. First, it advances pluralist perspectives on climate economics that go beyond the mainstream. This accounts for the diversity in economic thinking, when aiming to understand the workings of our economies and the intricacies of economy-social-ecological interactions. Second, it supports the much underrated dialogue between economics and the world of arts and humanities, when shaping and delivering low-carbon and socially inclusive economies. This is viewed as critical to disseminate knowledge, reimagine the purpose of our economies and the world we live in, and instil change.

Policy work on "greening" the European economy, with a focus on linking EU's new industrial strategy with climate change and low-carbon energy initiatives and measures. Notable contributions were: the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) proposed by the European Commission in March 2023, the Commision’s Staff Working Document (SWD) on Investment Needs Assessment and Funding Availabilities to strengthen EU’s Net-Zero Technology Manufacturing Capacity (also published in March 2023), and the SWD underpinning NZIA (to be published in June 2023).

This position focused mostly on research on topics related to the sustainability of the built environment, systems thinking, complexity economics, as well as on inter-disciplinary dialogue pertaining to the meaning of scientific model validation, particularly when applied to sustainability policy analysis. My affiliation was with the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering at the UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources.

I worked for 1 year with the Social Investment Strategy unit, part of the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion at the European Commission in Brussels. This policy work focused on the social dimensions of sustainable development, in particular issues pertaining to EU social and employment policies and the UN's 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); equity aspects (income disparities and inequality of opportunity); and policy elements related to the inclusion of non-EU migrants into EU society and labour markets.

I worked during this period (and also during 2014) as an independent researcher and consultant on projects targeting climate change economics and inclusive green growth dimensions. Projects included: contribution to a UNEP/OECD/GGKP led-project on the stringency of environmental regulations in developing countries; evaluation of a new ecological macroeconomic model developed by the New Economics Foundation; research on the feasibility of green growth scenarios (with Vienna University of Economics and Business); and the evaluation of a methodology for assessing strategic national policy action for fostering smart specialisation (National Scientific Research Institute for Labour and Social Protection, Romania).

My overall role at the European Commission, DG ENER was to contribute to the economic analysis of EU energy-related policies, improve the quality of its impact assessments related to new or revised policies, and suggest ways to enhance the evidence base of policy-making. I managed an ongoing project on the macroeconomics of energy and climate policies with a focus on innovation and finance, and have been involved in various policy scenario and modelling exercises contributing to better informed decision-making.
