About Şerban Scrieciu

I have been working at the science-policy interface for almost 20 years, in the area of climate change economics, climate and energy policy analysis, and inclusive green growth or just low-carbon transitions. My expertise includes the macroeconomics of pursuing the sustainable development goals (SDGs), energy-environment-economy large-scale modelling with application to climate policy from a Post Keynesian perspective, low-carbon innovation and finance, interactions between climate change mitigation and social inequalities, and systems thinking and complexity economics applied to the climate change problem. I am a strong advocate of interdisciplinary scientific analysis, a promoter of a diversity of schools of thought and perspectives within the economics discipline, and much interested as well in fostering dialogue between economists and artists.I am the founder and director of the freshly established Interdisciplinary Climate Economics for Nature and Society (ICENS) lab, which encourages pluralism in economic thinking and interactions between economics and the arts and humanities. I am also employed with the European Commission in Brussels (currently on personal leave), where I have been working on the economics underpinning EU climate, energy, social and industrial policy proposals and assessments. Finally, I am also an honorary senior research fellow (Bartlett School of Environment, Energy, and Resources) and a teaching fellow (UCL Summer School) at University College London, where he leads the summer module "Economics for Sustainability: Climate Change and Social Inequalities".My natively country is Romania. I have an MA degree from the University of Sussex and a PhD from The University of Manchester in UK. When time permits, I enjoy urban photography, and discovering places and cultures.

  • Interdisciplinary Climate Economics For Nature And Society - Icens Lab
    Founder & Director
Interdisciplinary Climate Economics For Nature And Society - Icens Lab Mar 2024 - Present
    Brussels Region, Belgium
ICENS lab is a new initiative that I recently set up in the form of a non profit organisation. The Interdisciplinary Climate Economics for Nature and Society (ICENS) lab aims to foster transformative thinking and practice, towards a future of justice and sustainability. The innovative side or added value of ICENS lab lies in its work ethics approach that pursues, in addition to multi-stakeholder engagement, two under-explored angles. First, it advances pluralist perspectives on climate economics that go beyond the mainstream. This accounts for the diversity in economic thinking, when aiming to understand the workings of our economies and the intricacies of economy-social-ecological interactions. Second, it supports the much underrated dialogue between economics and the world of arts and humanities, when shaping and delivering low-carbon and socially inclusive economies. This is viewed as critical to disseminate knowledge, reimagine the purpose of our economies and the world we live in, and instil change.
