My interest in the weather started when I was a child. While most children would watchcartoons, I would watch the local news to learn how the weather would be for the day. I wouldusually watch several local news channels and the weather channel to see how close the differentmeteorologist's weather predictions would match. After gathering my "data," I would report mydaily weather knowledge to my family, letting them know whether it would rain that day or beextremely hot. One day, my mother suggested that I think about becoming a meteorologist whenI grow up. At the time, I just viewed my love for the weather as a hobby, never thinking aboutpotentially turning it into a career. I decided to research what I would have to do to become ameteorologist. After being accepted into college, I selected a major that would prepare me for entering the meteorology field. Once I enter the meteorology field, I hope to make a lastingimpact by using my passion and knowledge gathered from inside and outside the classroom tohelp others to recognize the importance of understanding weather. I have noticed that when I tellpeople about my future career choice; I am always met with people who think I should haveselected a more important career path, but I try to explain how meteorology is critical to all of usand our everyday life. I also hope to be a source of inspiration to young African American girlswho are interested in the weather like I was. One thing that I noticed as a child when I would seemeteorologists on TV was that most of them were men and only a few were women and a smallminority were African American women. I know that there are more African American womenin the field now, but I still hope to be a role model for young African American girls so that theyknow that one day they will be the one on TV forecasting the weather. Overall, my interest inmeteorology exceeds a simple fascination for the weather. I cannot imagine myself thriving in adifferent career field like I know I would when I become a meteorologist. It is a field that I amdedicated to and one that I hope I will have the chance to continue learning about andcontributing to for many years.
