Leuven):Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Despite extensive research, there are a few available medicines to fight against liver cancer and they are mainly inefficient.The Hippo pathway effectors Yes-associated protein (YAP) and transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) can be a very prominent target for liver cancer therapy due to their importance in growth and progression of cancers although its function in the maintenance and homeostasis when the tumor is developed remains unclear.In the thesis, we aimed to understand the role of YAP and TAZ in tumor cell maintenance, inducing CCA and HCC formation in mouse liver.
