Homesteaded by my great-great grandfather in 1904, the family business has long-been managing land to produce grass and beef. While working full-time "on-farm, non-farm" and traveling ~25%, alongside family members I take part in decisions regarding capital budgeting, land management, estate planning, and day-to-day responsibilities.

DecisionNext provides market simulation software to create commodity market forecasts; typical customers are selling or buying large volumes of agricultural commodities, food products, or other natural resources. I joined as the Series A funding round closed, responsible for generating leads, facilitating all sales calls from initial qualification to final signature, and managing executive relationships for existing accounts.

This team is complemented by more than 250 subject matter experts and specialists around the world who provide the first-hand experience and strategic support targeted to specific needs of each client.

The advancment team directs the programming and strategic marketing of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in the areas of development, communications, student leadership opportunities, and alumni. I reported directly to the Assistant Dean of Advancement regarding student employees, major gifts, donor acquisition, and donor stewardship. In this position I was an internal and external representative of the college student body to stakeholders and benefactors of our college in the public and private sectors. This role included written correspondence with donors, proposal writing, in-person visits, and public advocacy. During the second year in this position I also managed a team of six student employees jointly reporting to myself and full-time staff members.

Alpha Gamma Rho is both a professional fraternity in fields related to natural resources, and a social fraternity. As the recruitment officer, I crafted and executed our marketing plan and recruitment strategy, gaining lifelong friendships along the way. Fraternity life is "leading by example 24/7," from academics to fly-fishing. Our chapter does not support hazing, nor would I recruit for any chapter that did so. The friendships, memories, and leadership experiences from Alpha Gamma Rho have been irreplaceable.

Noble agriculture consultants serve over 1500 rural landowners and operators in areas of economics, agronomy, wildlife, animal science, and land management. This internship role allowed me to work alongside professional consultant teams learning about economic and social aspects of sustainable, profitable, land management. I also conducted scientific research in a team setting on high-density livestock grazing and seed germination.

CSA is a government relations firm focused on agricultural policy. As a summer Policy Fellow, I assisted in the 2014 Farm Bill whip effort, and was introduced to congressional lobbying and policy development through working alongside other members of the firm. I participated in over 50 hill visits, coordinated fundraising events, analyzed and developed political strategy, and researched changes in farm policy over time. I was lucky to work with the CSA team during a defining time in American agricultural policy. The Minnesota Corn Growers Association, a CSA client, made my time in DC possible.

As a pilot project for what would become AgriCorps, I and two colleagues worked with local school instructors and students to initiate two agriculture education programs. Our key focus areas were practical applications in smallholder food production, catalyzing civic support for agricultural education in rural schools, student interpersonal communication, and garnering support from state elected officials and agencies. We also met with national NGO program leaders and local implementation teams to conduct 'train-the-trainer' events."Post-conflict" still defines modern Liberia. One month was not nearly enough time.

An elected, 1-year, volunteer position, national FFA officers travel over 330 days and 100,000 miles to speak at leadership events, cultivate support for agriculture education, deliver leadership trainings, and represent the student membership on the National FFA Board of Directors. Over that year I was fortunate to deliver and/or facilitate over 200 audience engagements. Our team received two months of training on curriculum design, fundraising, public speaking, and interviewing. I met with leadership boards of fortune 500 companies both directly and indirectly engaged in agriculture. The year concluded with hosting 56,000 students at the National FFA Convention.

After graduating from high school, I spent one year in this elected position delivering leadership trainings, mentoring students, and garnering support for agricultural education in Idaho. This 'gap year,' of sorts, was made possible by working half-time on our family ranch.
