Product Engineering Intern

Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

I gained a variety of engineering experience while working on a team that is developing a hybrid transmission for commercial busses that can disconnect from the engine and run solely on electricity. I designed a concept speed sensor that will reduce the system energy losses, and organized testing to validate the design. I also designed a test fixture that will allow the team to tests the individual hydraulic circuits in the transmission. Additionally, I interfaced with customers to determine if our product was able to meet their needs by simulating the energy usage along various bus routes they specified. I also performed an efficiency analysis to determine the necessary cooler size for the system's inverter

Product Engineering Intern

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

As a product engineering intern, I was placed in the Digital and Connected Services group. There I worked independently on analyzing the ability to relate various databases, while simultaneously providing a measure of data quality and performing attribute identification. Relating a variety of databases is useful in providing a more wholesome picture/ story of a transmission throughout its life. To perform this analysis effectively and efficiently, I used my previous experience with other coding software to teach myself SQL Server. While working through this analysis, I identified problem areas of data quality and met with database managers to work to resolve these issues. I then presented the results from my analysis to the department, which were then taken and presented by the CTO at the quarterly PE meeting. The report and SQL Server stored procedures I had created throughout the analysis were handed on to additional data scientists to continue my work following my internship. Additionally, I started preliminary research into predictive maintenance of the transmission. I taught myself Orange Analytics and Jupyter Notebook to explore various data mining/ machine learning techniques on attributes I had identified in my previous analysis. This research was mostly exploratory, however, it opened my eyes to the value of using data mining and machine learning techniques to providing future innovative solutions. With no previous knowledge/ experience of data management or data science, I greatly enjoyed putting in the work required to teach myself the necessary metrics, skills, and programs used to effectively execute and communicate the results of my research and analysis.

Jun 2019 - Aug 2019

Operations Engineering Intern

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

As an Operations Engineer, I was tasked with developing a plan to reduce the amount of scrapped tool holders. After evaluating engineering documents and working with technicians I was able to successfully develop and implement a plan. Simultaneously, I worked to determine the cause of discrepancies between two transmission main case leak testing machines. I held meetings with engineering experts and machine operators, analyzed data to identify key issues, and then designed/ performed additional tests on the parts that failed due to the identified key issues. At the conclusion of my internship, I trained a full-time engineer to implement my correction plan.

Jun 2018 - Aug 2018

Machine Operator

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

I started gaining engineering related work experience in my last year of secondary school while working as a Machine Operator. My hard work and ability to learn quickly granted me the opportunity to work closely with engineers on special projects and learn numerous roles with increasing responsibility. Within months I was training new hires and performing quality control checks with full confidence of myself and the managers to make necessary judgment calls. My work at Keihin has allowed me to look at things differently and prosper in my first internship.
