Hi everyone! I am currently a senior nursing student at York College of Pennsylvania. I decided I wanted to become a nurse after a personal experience being in the hospital. The nurses had such a huge impact on me during that time. Their compassion and care made me want to make others feel the same way I had. To them, they were probably just doing their jobs, but to me, their kindness led me to deciding what I wanted to do with my life. Within the black community especially, mental health is such a taboo topic. It leads so many people to suffer in silence and not get the help they need due to feelings of shame. I don't want anyone to feel ashamed for needing help. It is so difficult to find mental health professionals that understand the connection between culture, trauma, and mental wellbeing that so many young minorities are dealing with today. My end goal is to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and help minority adolescents that are struggling with mental illnesses get the help that they need. I am currently in clinical courses and have experience taking care of patients in different care settings and specialties. Some examples of units I have practiced on are Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Med/Surg, and Rehabilitation. This has helped me improve my critical thinking skills, and ability to accurately assess patients. My time in clinical has helped me determine what areas I would like to pursue throughout my career as a registered nurse. Although my end goal is to become a Psych NP, I also want to experience working on as many units as possible. This will help me to become a more well rounded nurse and a better asset to my team. In addition, I plan on working as a nurse extern throughout my breaks from school so I can continue to improve on my skills as a nurse. I am excited to see where this degree will take me in the future!
