Along with fulfilling my roles as a research student, occupying the role as a teaching assistant for Biology Seminar during my two years at North Carolina A&T State University was a rewarding experience that elevated my leadership skills. For this course, I primarily instructed freshman students and upperclassmen that had to remediate due to past failure in the course. Students are expected to pass this course as a requisite for graduation. Beside my obligations as a full-time graduate student, my multi-tasking skills significantly improved, especially when instructing multiple class sections. For this course, I instructed how human body undergo positive changes during health and fitness to promote healthy lifestyle. In other words, students were responsible for the completing a Healthy Living Project. For the semester, students were expected to research and engage in a self-study that explores the benefits on making healthy lifestyle changes, and how these benefits impacted their overall health. For this research study, students focused on a related topic (of their choice) relating to the following focus areas: metabolic measurement, physical activity, diet, and water/fluid intake. Student also had the option to work with a partner of their choice. The research paper was the first assignment given for this project. For this assignment, students were expected to analyze and interpret sources relating to their desired topics for those focus areas and discuss the potential benefits that will impact their overall health. Then, students conducted a research study by gathering data and information by promoting healthy lifestyle changes to their own personal health. Finally, the students were instructed to give an oral presentation (last day of class) to discuss their healthy lifestyle changes and how it impacted their health overall.
