About Shakiera Causey, Phd, Ma
Dr. Causey is mixed methods researcher with 15 years of experience examining the intersection of gender, race, and health outcomes. Presently, Dr. Shakiera Causey is a Senior Principal Research Scientist for Evidence to Action (E2A) at the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI). In her work, Dr. Causey examines health inequities, attending to the contributory role of social determinants of health in health outcomes and healthcare access among Black and Latinx/Hispanic families. She is committed to understanding the unique systemic challenges that communities of color must navigate to manage their health and the community-based practices that influence positive adaptation to cope with these challenges. In addition to presenting her work domestically and abroad at professional conferences, Dr. Causey has published her work in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Her most recent manuscript, “Navigating White Spaces: Racial socialization, ethnic identity, and the emergent coping profiles of Black women attending a predominately white institution” is published in Research in Human Development.. She currently serves as the Treasurer on the Steering Committee for the Black Caucus of the Society of Research on Child Development and was formerly a Student and Early Career member representative from 2019-2021 and the RARS Social Policy team of SRCD from 2022-2024. She is also a current member of the Finance and Audit Committee of SRCD. Prior to joining NNPHI, Dr. Causey was a postdoctoral scholar at Duke School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry, where she was also a trainee in the Interdisciplinary Training Program in AIDS sponsored by the Division of Infectious Diseases and Department of Medicine and funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID). She holds a doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Greensboro, NC. Dr. Causey also holds a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in psychology from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. She has served as an adjunct professor of psychology at North Carolina A&T State University, NC Central University, and Guilford Technical Community College. Most recently she has joined Walden University as a contributing faculty member in the College of Health Sciences and Public Policy.
