  • Uk Coal
    Shift Charge Engineer
    Uk Coal Aug 2005 - Jun 2015
    Thoresby Colliery, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire
Since leaving school in 1995 to become an electrical apprentice, my career progression was through the electrical engineering department working for the same company within the highly regulated mining industry. The last 12 years with UK Coal (formally British Coal and The National Coal Board) were spent as an Assistant Electrical Engineer/project planner. During my time in this role, I have on many occasions managed, organised and lead teams of highly skilled craftsmen in the high intensity mining environment which demanded projects to be completed safely, on budget and on time. Whilst working on these large projects I was required to liaise very closely with other departments within my own organisation, as well as communicating with equipment manufacturers in a professional manner to ensure that all systems integrated smoothly, and where required find solutions to engineering problems to ensure that deadlines did not overrun. Although my background is predominantly electrically biased, I have a very good understanding of mechanical engineering including working on hydraulic and pneumatic systems, which allowed me to become very comfortable fault finding on systems as a whole. The position which i held also involved the testing and commissioning of both heavy duty equipment such as conveyor drives and large machinery, as well as P.L.C. and control systems, where a combined electrical and mechanical knowledge was essential.
