Providing data integration and analysis expertise for transportation industry stakeholders (engineering & development teams, IT groups, planning groups and safety organizations)

Founded and led the Vehicle Motion and Context Team and co-founded the Division of Data and Analytics. The Motion & Context team focuses on quantifying driving, interactions of vehicles in the traffic flow, and factors that affect drivers, traffic, and safety. The team’s services are contracted by manufacturers, suppliers and technology companies that are developing perception, planning, and control systems. Division level projects range from creation of enterprise scale web portals, used by corporations planning their safety strategy, to supporting the US DOT in developing robust and efficient methods for selecting scenarios and testing ML/CV based driving systems.

Served on VTTI’s Executive Committee, contributing to defining VTTI’s values, strategic roadmap, and organizational structure.

As the Director of the Center for Automated Vehicle Systems, I led and managed a team specializing in the design and execution of large automated driving related research programs for both industry and public sector clients. The Center was staffed by PhD, MS, and BS level personnel with expertise in engineering, physics, transportation, driver performance, safety, statistics, and data science, including visualization. Directing the Center included overseeing operational activities, contributing to VTTI’s strategic direction, ensuring Institute collaboration, managing resources and operational budget, establishing new strategic partnerships, and developing/attracting talent.

Led a group performing targeted test track and on-road experiments as well as national scale driving and motorcycle riding data collections with thousands of drivers and hundreds of motorcyclists. Developed efficient and accurate algorithmic methods for analyzing driving data, including associating large quantities of vehicle data and video (37 million miles/1 million hours) with digital map data to quantify the driving domain and measure driving differences.Founded VTTI’s Motorcycle Research Group. Led the collection of over 760,000 miles of riding from motorcyclists in California, Virginia, Arizona, and Florida. My team performed analyses for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, identifying crash related factors and rider performance capabilities.

Performed research for industry and public sector partners focusing on driver warning systems, adaptive cruise control, lateral support systems, driver measurement, driver monitoring, crash causation, crash countermeasures, risk, distraction, etc.

Responsible for vehicle human factors support for several vehicle platforms. Became the lead human factors engineer on Lincoln Car programs. Provided human factors engineering support in development of adaptive cruise control, multimedia, navigation systems, and driver warning systems interfaces.

Conducted a variety of research and testing activities to support the development of adaptive cruise control, including deceleration response behavior, controls design, and display design.
