I have worked on both sides of the negotiations table, representing teachers and the school district - but always had student interests as my top priority. From 2013 to late 2022, I was very active with political reform - knowing that any kind of reform (education, environment, healthcare, etc.) is limited until we reduce the influence of big money in politics and reform the way in which we conduct our elections. As of October, 2022, I have returned to be a full time teacher (in Seaside/Monterey, CA) and will continue to be a part time reformer and consultant with various election reform organizations.

    Sacramento, California
Managing the campaign to qualify a CA initiative for the November 2016 ballot called the Voters' Right To Know Act (www.VotersRightToKnow.org). We discontinued the initiative drive after Senator Bob Hertzberg and Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced the introduction of SB 1349, which will overhaul CAL-Access, the state web site that allows the pubic to see who's giving, receiving, and spending in politics. We did this knowing that there was strong political interest in passage of the necessary reforms. Once CAL-Access is overhauled (early 2019), it will easily show the links between donations and policy makers, which as of now is very difficult to research and view in a comprehensive manner. This bill accomplished one of the primary goals of the VRTK initiative. The CA Legislature eventually passed the bill and Governor Brown signed it. Another major reform of VRTK, AB 1200, was also passed by the legislature, requiring people lobbying on behalf of contracts to register as lobbyists. However, it was vetoed by Gov. Brown. The final core piece of VRTK, the CA Disclose Act (AB 700), passed the State Assembly but fell 1 vote short of passing the State Senate. The CA Disclose Act was finally passed in 2017 (AB 249).2016 was the first year that there was an option for the initiative sponsors to negotiate with the legislators, so that the initiative could be passed as a bill by the legislature rather than going to the voters. Once we saw that the majority of the reforms would pass the legislature, we stopped the initiative drive and advocated for the passage of the bills. VRTK continues to improve disclosure and transparency laws throughout the country.
