Sustainability Action Research (SAR) is a student-run research program in the UCLA Institute of the Environment & Sustainability (IoES). The program is comprised of student teams paired with campus stakeholders to address various sustainability issues at UCLA. As co-director I selected and managed seven research teams, was responsible for leading an hour-long class each week, and organized social and outreach events.

Dr. Jenny Jay's environmental engineering lab focuses on the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes in environmental systems. I assisted in the design and execution of experiments, completed a research project for the Sustainable LA Grand Challenges Undergraduate Research Scholars Program in 2018, and completed an honors thesis in 2019 focusing on pathogenic bacteria in coastal water and its impact on human health.

Led the water quality team for UCLA’s Navajo Water Project, which designs and constructs pressurized water systems for families in the Navajo Nation. My team focused on water storage, sanitation, and greywater. I traveled to the site in 2017 and 2018, working on site assessment, construction and follow-up of our first system. My responsibilities included managing the greywater system design, leading meetings, and coordinating site trips.

SCOA is a summer camp that exposes Japanese first through sixth graders to American culture and English. I coached the soccer portion of the camp and worked with other Pac-12 student athletes to teach and take care of campers. We spent five weeks in three camp locations including a benefit camp in Rikuzentakata for survivors of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
