About Jonathan Shaw

I am Professor of Photography and Media, Co-founder and Director of Coventry University’s Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL), with university group wide responsibility for education innovation. Inspired by the scale of invention at photography’s genesis, driven to create transformative experiences, I seek to challenge a number of assumptions and open up new horizons surrounding networked media and higher education.I have been an active interdisciplinary practitioner and academic leader within Higher Education for over 20 years. For the past 10 years, prompted by the radical, profound and systematic changes affecting Higher Education in a digital era, my innovative thinking and leadership has impacted curricula design, next generation learning spaces and partnerships with internationally leading-edge educational technology start-ups.With a strong belief in a values-based approach to leadership, I built the DMLL from the ground up, establishing trust and respect amongst my peers and the wider university community. By providing an inclusive environment to thrive, and a high-performance culture, I ensure my team consistently deliver outstanding results. My work has published alongside photographic pioneers such as Eadweard Muybridge and Harold Edgerton and can be seen as part of a long tradition of experimentation whereby the camera becomes both an instrument of scientific record and a tool for aesthetic exploration. I have been described as being part of an early generation of artists responsible for the emergence of a new school of photography which blurs the boundaries between the still and moving image. As a leader of practice-based research his work was selected in 1 of the 4 impact case studies for 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Unit of Assessment 32 Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory and assessed as world leading or internationally excellent. I take an active approach to my professional activities working as Chair of Birmingham Open Media (BOM) UK, International Academic Board member for Photography Studies College, Melbourne, Australia and previously Trustee for The Photographers' Gallery, London. He is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University's Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP) and outgoing Chair of the Association for Photography in Higher Education (APHE).http://www.jonathan-shaw.comSpecialties: Education Innovation Leadership, Higher Education, Disruptive Media, Open Education, Photography

I was invited to present to the Times Higher Education Award Panel about the initiatives and impact of the departmental open classes, which formed part of the University's winning entry to the Entrepreneurial University of the Year Award 2011.Together with Shaun Hides, Head of Department, I led the department's strategy for 2012, specifically the development of the ‘mobile learning technology package’ which we believe enables us to present ourselves as the UK’s first Department of Media to go mobile.I was jointly responsible for the successful pitch for circa. half a million pounds to refurbish the Media building in preparation for our one to one 'mobile' scheme. I led and delivered the redevelopment which provided our students with contemporary, flexible, open and aspirational spaces within which to learn and work.Between 2009-2012 the department's league table position improved by 17 points from near the bottom to a creditable 14th as a subject for New Universities.

It is committed to excellence in practice, theory and research and provides a critical forum within which to discuss and debate a broad range of matters relevant to contemporary photographic culture and educational practice, and to reflect upon what is viewed as best practice within these debates. The Association acts as the representative body for those associated with photography in higher education and formulates policy and strategy with regard to representing the views of the HE sector to other appropriate organisations and government bodies.Alongside my fellow executive committee members (Richard Mulhearn, Linda Marchant and Judy Harrison and latterly Andrew Robinson), we were able to transform and grow the membership of the Association into a thriving hub of awards, bursaries and a range of activities with HE and cultural institutions. Importantly, we established firm links across the UK with the Council for Higher Education (CHEAD) and America with formation of a key exchange partnership with the Society for Photographic Education (SPE). A further selection of exciting new initiatives were under development and are progressing with the new Executive committee leadership of Associate Professor Simon Standing and Dr Liam Devlin. http://aphe.ac.uk
