About Keegan Shaw

I really don’t like selling myself so I have decided to do a Q&A with myself. What is your job description?I am a Senior Software Developer at Highwood Emissions Management. My primary role is to help build the full stack of a SaaS Inventory Emissions Management System. When I started at Highwood, I was a data analyst and developer, whereby building out LDAR-Sim, Leak Detection and Repair Simulator, I helped clients interpret and analysis datasets and optimize their LDAR programs and technolgies. What is your background?I often struggle to answer that question, I think because my background is diverse, where I have been: - A Wind Energy R&D Engineer - An Automation Engineer (Industrial Control Systems) - A Grad Student, studying GIS and Microwave Remote Sensing - A Geospatial Software Developer - And now a Data Scientist, and Software DeveloperI gravitate to jobs that use and invent technology, because I love inventing, and technology is nothing more than a chassis powered by ingenuity and hard work. I also enjoy learning, and lucky for me I have done a lot of learning in my 10 years as a professional across many industries as I have worked in the Renewable Energy, Oil & Gas, Power Generation, and Telecommunications Industries. What are your three biggest accomplishments as a professional?Great question! First, I once got to drive a train for work, not going to say where or why because I am pretty sure that I do not have a Train License or whatever certification is required to drive one. Second, as a Grad Student, I once sent an email that resulted in the physical reconfiguration of a satellite lens. So I once prompted a physical action that was literally out of this world. I take a lot of pride in what I do, always, so I’d be amiss if I didn’t actually include a serious work-related milestone. I was once tasked with developing a Safety and Control System for a 1 MW Solar thermal Power Generator. I wrote a lot of the control narrative, asked a tone of questions, spent a lot of waking (and sleeping) hours thinking about it, developed the system, tested the system, and refined the system. And it worked, as in generated up to 1.6 MW on clear sunny day! It has since been deemed uneconomical, has been shut in and boarded up, but it was amazing to see it in action.

Listed skills include Matlab, Electrical Engineering, C++, Visual Basic, and 46 others.

I also think their approach is genuine, in that GHG reduction is a goal of each individual employee, and they just so happen to have the skillsets and knowledge to achieve this. One of the focuses of the company is the Emissions Management Toolkit, a SaaS offering aimed to help companies, calculate, reconscile, and track emissions from their ever-changing assets, standardize data for reporting purposes, plan emission reducing projects, and reconcile measured date with bottom-up inventory calculated emissions. Building such a software system is difficult, were nuances in standards, inconsistencies in data, unknown uncertainties, and sheer scale of inventories can complicate the process. This is where I come in, and ultimately why I work for Highwood. I get to apply my technical skillset, knowledge of emissions, ingenuity, and desire to learn, to build a modern and useful software solution. Show less

City Slickers take note, the struggle of rural internet is real, and there are a lot more country folk then you realize. I got to do a lot of stuff for Mage. I spent most my days building a spatial physical network design web-app; sophisticated mesh networks call for sophisticated network designs. What a cool experience. I worked with a small team who were incredibly clever and pleasant (Ammar and Moein), and although I didn't get to focus on the AI module (Moein), I learned so much about open sourced software, databases, WebDev, Git, Containerization, and a plethora of programming languages. (Updated Feb, 2018) Tarco specializes in industrial and commercial process and safety control systems. Which means I do too because I worked there forever. Tarco appears to be the remnants of an old cowboy engineering company, eager to take on pretty strange automation jobs and automate on a budget. Seriously, we once specialized in pig barn ventilation systems. Consequently, I would call most, if not all, of the Tarconians "Automation Engineering General Specialists". More formally, Tarconians are specialists of power turbine, natural gas compression station, and oil storage facility control and safety systems. So Tarconians are "Automation engineering general specialists & specialist specialists" if I were in charge of making the companies business cards. I dealt with Rockwell, GE, Horner, and Siemens PLCs, (and a few others), and Rockwell, Horner, GE, FactoryTalk, and WonderWare HMIs (Graphical interfaces). I worked with oil & gas companies, power plants, wastewater facilities, manufacturing facilities, and various other applications, which require automation. I gained a ton of experience working with various computer systems and PLC programming software packages. I would also say I have learned how to be a pretty good engineer. Which I think first and foremost means being able to work with people, ask questions, answer all questions asked, and take the time to think things through. Secondly, I have learned how to balance customer needs, wants, budget and my own safety or functionality concerns effectively. Show less

(Updated Feb, 2018) I was a member in a design group who chose to design , build and test a 915 MHz Local Positioning System, using an Angle-of-Arrival triangulation. I think its purpose was to save sports teams money by allowing them to automate a process of chalking lines on a sports field. I now realize we could have given it a way better design objective, like as a replacement for GPS in an underground mine, or as a guidance system on a space-ship, but sports; am I right? I now realize we could have given it a way better design objective, like as a replacement for GPS in an underground mine, or as a guidance system on a space-ship, but sports; am I right? It was actually pretty neat, and we were certainly proud of it. We designed, milled, drilled through-holes into, and then mounted components onto several microwave frequency printed circuit boards ourselves....and it actually worked! Or at least in an anachoic chamber. Which, by the way, if you have never heard of, please google it, because they are pretty spooky. My good friend Donald (still good as of 2018) and I were pretty passionate about the results, and probably cared about it more than anything we had ever cared about. We did most of the early stages of development, PCB board design, and mounting, prototype testing, and pretty much any form of documentation our undergraduate instructors could think of. Donny, for the most part, programmed the Arduino controller, and I mostly replaced the parts we broke because I kept short circuiting the $25 phase detection chip. Those were the days. Show less

I am a prairie boy, and from the office I could literally throw a stone in most directions and hit the Atlantic Ocean, so I was excited. I think Wind is the future, or at least one of the futures of the energy industry, so being a part of it's research and development was very important to me. My duties involved assisting in small wind turbine performance testing, which was mainly comprised of data-crunching and documentation. I learned how to code in Visual Basic so I could make our data-crunching procedure more efficient and customizable. Additionally, I learned how to setup up turbines and meteorological measurement stations. My coworkers were awesome. They were insightful, helpful, friendly, and dedicated to their work. Outside of work they were also wicked. They took me deep sea fishing and welcomed them into there homes for jam sessions, lobster, and homemade beverages. Show less
