Shawn Orr is the Director of the Center for Innovation & Teaching Excellence, as well as faculty in the Department of Communication Studies at Ashland University in Ashland Ohio. She has worked in higher education for over 25 years as a Communication, Business, and General Education professor, Department Chairperson, academic advisor, Dean of Faculty, and Director of College Success courses and has taught more than 20 different courses in the public relations, business, management, composition, humanities and communication areas. Her areas of specialization include public relations, strategic communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and public speaking and her research interests include communication technology, academic technology, social media development, and the impact of active learning on content mastery.Orr’s education, training and teaching is rooted in a social scientific view of communication and much of her career has focused on being a practitioner in the field of communication including developing and delivering more than 200 presentations for college, conference and keynote addresses.

Prepared, developed and delivered over 200 workshops, webinars, presentations, training seminars, and keynote addresses across the country on student success, advising, online and hybrid learning, portfolio development, retention strategies, service learning, technology, generational teaching and learning, flipped classroom, apps to engage students, student engagement, active teaching and learning strategies, experiential learning, and 21st century skill development.Consulted with classroom professors, instructors and school administrators on methods to achieve success in higher education as well as provide curriculum design support. Acted as an implementation coach for key customers, providing product usage and pedagogical support to program coordinators and/or faculty adopting a new products and teaching methods for their courses.Collaborated with product, marketing, sales and events services to develop and assist in the execution of customer events that had high impact in terms of faculty professional development and lead to sales conversion. Wrote blogs, articles, and created podcasts and videos on active learning and student success for multiple organizations; developed and edited content for the TeamUP Faculty Development Portal, including coordinating the portal content, marketing, and managing customers; and co-content developer and creator of the MindTap Educators Studio, a 20-hour self-paced course designed to help faculty engage students, stay organized, and track progress with this digital resource; wrote script, created story boards and was featured in the MTES commercial.Developed content and webinars for content marketing campaigns on the value of digital, Cengage Learning digital products, and other topics in using digital in the classroom. Proactively worked with assigned Sales team members to create faculty development strategies in support of using digital tools to facilitate student success in the classroom.
