About Sheila Mburu

Global health professional with ~10 years experience in global health and international development, and experience working internationally in The Gambia and Rwanda. At the Tony Blair Institute, I work with teams embedded within Africa CDC and the West Africa Health Organization to strengthen institutional capacity of both organisations, and with the Senior Technical Officer to drive thought leadership for the programme. Passionate about locally led global development. I previously worked as a Research and Policy Officer at the UK Collaborative of Development Research, where I led on the organisations Global Health activities, and convened two of UKCDR's cross-funder groups focussed on global health - The Health Funders Forum (HFF) and the UKCDR Epidemics Preparedness and Response Group. Both groups brought together major UK funders of global health research such as The Department for International Development (DFID), Wellcome Trust, The Department of Health and Social Care and UK Research and Innovation to share information, and identify areas of synergy. I worked at World Health Organization Rwanda country office where my work focussed on nutrition and NCDs. At WHO, I drafted Rwanda's national protocol for strengthening nutrition surveillance of stunting in children under 5, supported surveys on malnutrition in Rwandan refugee camps and as a member of the UN Communications Group, supported implementation of The United Nations Joint Communications strategy. At WHO, I was a key editor of WHO Rwanda's 2012-2013 biennial report and developed the first Twitter and Facebook accounts for WHO Rwanda. Additionally, in collaboration with the UN dispensary, I spearheaded a series of internal UN health promotion videos.Whilst at WHO, I co-authored a paper in a book chapter on brain drain caused by recruitment of health workers from sub-Saharan Africa to developed countries.I hold an MSci in Biochemistry & Genetics from Nottingham University, and an Msc degree in Nutrition for Global Health from the London School of Tropical Hygiene & Medicine (LSHTM). At LSHTM, I was elected student representative, initiated the university's first ever TEDx event and was awarded the John Rivers Prize for "Student who showed most promise". In 2011, I was selected as one of the 100 most promising black graduates in the UK.

    At UKCDR, I led on the global health portfolio, and UKCDR's work on safeguarding and equitable partnerships. Currently, I am also the lead for researcher coordination of the newly established global COVID CIRCLE initiative. In this role, I lead activities to facilitate coordination between researchers working on COVID-19 globally, with a focus on low resource settings to ensure greater opportunities for engagement, and potential future collaborations to support impact of research, and learning for future pandemics or epidemics. As a research and policy officer, I am also responsible for undertaking data analysis and mapping, and providing research and policy advice to UKCDR member organisations and key stakeholders. I also convene two of UKCDR's cross-funder groups, The Health Funders Forum and the Epidemics Preparedness and Reponse Group which bring together the UK's major funders of global health research. Through this convening role, I manage liasion with our members including DFID, the Department of Health and Social Care, UKRI and the Wellcome Trust.The UK Collaborative on Development Research (UKCDR - http://www.ukcdr.org.uk/) brings together UK government departments who fund research in international development to maximise the impact of their collective investments tackle the world's greatest challenges such as global health epidemics, maternal and neonatal health and climate change. UKCDR's members are The Department for International Development, The Department of Health and Social Care, The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, UK Research and Innovation and The Wellcome Trust. UKCDR is governed by HMG Strategic Coherence of ODA funded Research board (SCOR), which comprises of the Chief Scientific Advisors and Executive Directors of our core members including Prof Chris Whitty, and is chaired by Professor Baron Peter Piot.

To this end, I:• Undertook a broad and extensive literature review of international and national non-governmental organisations, regional development banks, UN Agencies and the private sector, and assessed their suitability for partnership with The Power of Nutrition based on the organisations pre-established criteria.• I conducted primary interviews with senior representatives of shortlisted organisations and developed a final report which highlighted organisations which most closely met the Power of Nutrition’s criteria.
