About Sheila Watson

I am currently a university academic working in the School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester. I have experience in a wide range of museum work, having started out as a secondary teacher and then moving on into museum education I subsequently worked as a museum manager, curator and chaired a Heritage Pertnership. As a historian I am interested in the ways in which history is made in museums and heritage sites. I am also committed to democratising the museum process and much of my former practice and my current teaching relates to the notion of community empowerment.

    I managed three local authority museums and an art gallery in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and set up and chaired a heritage partnership with English Heritage, the National Trust, the local and county councils. During a seven year period we worked together with the local community to develop our sites and our collections so that they had greater meaning for the people we served. The final project I led was the creation of a new museum, Time and Tide, the museum of Great Yarmouth Life, which was a collaboration with the Great Yarmouth Preservaton Trust, funded in part by HLF and oosting just over £4.5 million in 2003.
