About Samantha Hellen
I’m tasked with making organisations profitable and efficient.Starting originally in the Oil industry, I became expert in helping small businesses grow. I was head hunted by ViaCom to franchise a subsidiary before moving into financial services (Colonial State bank before the CBA acquisition). Prior to joining Westpac Group, I ran my own consultancy focused on developing and executing on growth strategies for small and medium sized organisations, and over 9 years I worked across many industries including Retail, Property, professional services, technology, health, FMCG and of course banking & finance.I was approached to consult to RAMS where in 3 months I developed and implemented a new operating model which over the past 15 years has proven to be profitable for both franchisor and franchisee. I went on to Head customer experience and then the operating office. Among my major accomplishments at RAMS was to assemble a program office and to build deposit functionality, which we did in less than 2 years from concept to market for approx. 10% of the Westpac budgeted cost. The RAMS deposit portfolio tipped $2B in less than 12 months. I stayed within Westpac Group and since then I’ve delivered on strategic initiatives across home ownership (I built an end-2-end operating program to oversee the initiatives that returned home ownership to system growth) and helped Executives to be their very best. One of the most rewarding things I have done since joining Westpac was as a secondee to start-up the operations for Thrive, a micro-finance organisation for refugees and asylum seekers. I created the risk policy and profile, finance, credit, origination, servicing, volunteering, human resources, administration, core-banking, marketing, business development, accounting & reporting systems, which enabled the organisation to lend compliantly to refugees within 3 months. I was also the registered company secretary until March 2019.I’ve never been a banker, but I know the industry and I’m adept at corporate agility. I realized my breadth and experience is more impactful when I’m aligned to a really smart executive. My key responsibilities are to:1. Keep my boss out of jail. (Successful so far)2. Make my boss look good. This is not hard as I am very selective of the executives for whom I work, but includes3. Ensuring my boss has the right information at the right time to make good decisions I asked my team recently how I’m going, and their response was “Sam, you are really good at what you do”. I’m pleased because that’s exactly what I want to be.
