I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science and a minor in Biology from Drake University. During my undergraduate career I was also a Division I athlete on the Drake Women's Rowing team which helped me value teamwork and push myself past limits I never thought possible. Post-graduation I had the pleasure of sharing my passion for science with 5th and 6th graders as a Naturalist at a science camp. My first Scientific Aid position involved monitoring an endangered fish species and all marine life in the California Delta with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). I went on field days in small craft (26-42ft) multiple times a month to collect samples. Scientific Aids also had the chance to be a guest on other projects such as sturgeon tagging where I worked with a gill net and was able to tag the sturgeon we captured. In January 2020, I began a position with CDFW's Steelhead Recovery and Monitoring Program out of the Los Alamitos, CA office. The team spent 75% of our time from Jan-May completing redd surveys of all coastal streams in the Santa Monica Mountains. We completed snorkeling surveys during the month of June for all streams. I have also had the opportunity to complete months of habitat typing and barrier assessments along San Diego Creek and Aliso Creek in Orange County. I wrote monthly reports outlining our fieldwork and data from the Santa Monica Mountain streams as well as a full watershed assessment report of San Diego Creek and Aliso Creek, both of which are published. In October 2021, I accepted an Environmental Scientist position with CDFW for drought monitoring of aquatic species in southern California with a focus on southern California steelhead trout. I sampled 20 streams for water quality, discharge, and wettedness over time within Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura counties and completed fish rescues as necessary. In addition to the drought program, I began leading the California Monitoring Program in October 2023 continuing work I completed as a scientific aid from 2020-2021. As of August 2024, I now work as a Drill Evaluator for the Office of Spill Prevention and Response within CDFW. I am well-versed in lab safety protocols for using chemicals, on-board vessel safety, and many types of stream surveying. I also have experience in retail as the volunteer Retail Sales Manager for the RailGiants Train Museum in Pomona, CA. Photography is also a passion of mine and I have been privileged to be published in magazines, online, and in DVDs.
