Shemeka F. Sorrells uses her passion for advocacy, unwavering commitment to social justice and avid pursuit of innovation to inspire and motivate individuals, professionals, teams and communities to create and implement equitable and sustainable solutions for system change initiatives. A highly creative, deep thinker and a mobilizer, Shemeka has led large scale initiatives and impacted positive outcomes related to improving reunification of families; decreasing homelessness, increasing employment rates and retention; improving mental well-being and safety of children and families. For over 20 years, Shemeka has focused on addressing the needs of marginalized communities through service delivery, program development, policy analysis, project management, consulting and grant-making. She has led strategic direction and oversight of public child welfare agency initiatives; young adult supportive housing, homeless outreach and community mental health program programs; and youth leadership and workforce development. Shemeka’s work now focuses primarily on reforming the child welfare system. This requires her to well- versed in many topics including systems change, racial equity, community organizing, social justice and child welfare structure, policies and outcomes. Shemeka believes that creating solutions to impact system change requires an understanding of historical context and its current impact. In addition, efforts should address the root cause of inequity and implemented across systems to ensure that all children and families are thriving. Shemeka serves as a Senior Director in the Strategic Consulting unit at Casey Family Programs. In this role, Shemeka collaborates with child welfare agency and system leaders, executive, legislative and judicial branch, service providers and philanthropic partners to (1) build strategic alliances; (2) expand leadership and workforce capacity by way of best practices; and (3) create and implement solutions that address underlying issues of inequality and negative outcomes to improve the safety, permanency and well-being of children, families and communities. Shemeka received her Master of Science degree in Psychology & Counseling from Troy University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Georgia Southern University.
