Inefficient theatre space allocation is a significant problem within the NHS, costing almost £500 million annually. Last-minute cancellations to electives due to unforeseen emergency demand leads to wasted resources, reduced prognosis, patient dissatisfaction and financial penalties for the hospital. Clearly a flexible, data-informed allocation system can significantly help to mitigate these inefficiencies. MedPredict optimises theatre space allocation by forecasting the future emergency surgery load. We have produced a machine learning solution that can dynamically predict upcoming emergency load 6 months in advance, in a more nuanced and accurate way than the current constant assumption. Our state of the art, Bayesian based system, shows significant improvement over the current system, and is able to significantly improve on the efficiency of theatre space booking.
