About Sidra Hashmi
I am a passionate, dedicated and resourceful graduate student at Queen's University. I am currently pursuing a PhD in sociology with a focus on crime and law under the supervision of Dr. Kay at Queen's University. My dissertation examines the prevalence, reporting outcomes and experiences among marginalized survivors of IPV. I finished my Master of Arts in Criminology with a specialization in Feminist and Gender Studies in August 2021 where I completed a thesis examining sexual assault case processing. I used written court decisions to determine how rape myths impacted immigrant racialized survivors. I completed my degree in the Joint Honours Criminology and Women's Studies program at the University of Ottawa in April 2019. I have over six years of experience developing oral and written communication, as well as critical thinking skills in both academic and professional settings. In my current position as a Teaching Assistant, I have developed my skills in assessment and problem-solving through marking assignments and meeting with students one-on-one to aid in their academic success. As a student and Research Assistant, I have also developed my skills in critical thinking and data analysis on topics such as Gender-Based Violence, alternatives to the Canadian criminal justice system and sociology of the law. Together, these experiences have shaped me into a driven, adaptable and efficient young professional working to use my education and skills as a research to improve society.
