Together with the NbS team, I am working on enhancing NbS in Europe for climate change adaptation with a main focus on 'Sponge Restoration'. The sponge restoration concept involves restoring natural drainage conditions of soils in the valleys of sub-basins in the middle mountain areas. Water retention can be achieved by delaying runoff flowing into the tributaries through the removal of artificial drainage systems at the foot of the slope. We aim to make use of the natural water-retaining capacity of the soil so we can slow the runoff and slowly release the water back into the river.

I had the great opportunity to do my internship at WWF-NL. I worked on stakeholder participation and the enhancement of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Europe for the Merlin Project as part of the WWF team. The MERLIN project is a ‘research and innovation action’ funded by the European Commission. The project was developed as a response to the alarming state of Europe’s environment and the increasing effects of climate change. Merlin will focus on securing economic prosperity, human well-being and social peace through systemic transformative change fuelled by ecosystem restoration using Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Assessing, quantifying, and valuing the effect of anthropogenic and climate change pressures on the vulnerability of coastal lagoons. Together with Deltares, I did an extensive study on coastal lagoon vulnerability. Through this thesis, I gained an appreciation for the role these ecosystems play in preserving the world's biodiversity and the significance of environmental hotspots for humans, plants, and animals.

Yangon, Myanmar

For my internship at VPdelta it was my responsibility to take a wave measuring buoy to Myanmar and for me deploy it in front of the coast of Yangon. This wave measuring buoy was called the Wavedroid and it was part of the project "Leapfrogging Delta Management in Myanmar; Showcase Smart Information Solutions in the Ayeyarwady Delta.”

For my thesis at Royal HaskoningDHV it was my responsibility to take a wave measuring buoy to Myanmar and for me deploy it in front of the coast of Yangon. With data gathered from the buoy and wave data from NOAA, I analysed prevailing wave patterns and the possibilities for the design of offshore structures.

For three full days, 40 selected students from 13 universities were immersed in an intensive program consisting of case studies, field trips, guest lectures and workshops that focused on the understanding of port and urban water-related issues. The program was finalized with a Grand Final where the teams presented their ‘StoryBoards’ (proposals) to senior representatives from Yangon Region Government, Myanmar Port Authority, Yangon City Development Committee, NEPS and Doh Eain.
