EDUCATION - MSc in Phytopathology (University of São Paulo, USP, 1991) and PhD in Phytopathology (Louisiana State University, LSU, 1996). Professional experience – Over 30 years on teaching, research, and extension on sugarcane and bacterial diseases of citrus trees transmitted by insects. MAIN ACTIVITIES – coordination and guidance of undergraduate and graduate studies at institutional and country (Ministry of Education) levels; national and international collaborations on research mainly on the etiology and management of the ‘citrus variegated chlorosis’ (CVC) and huanglongbing’ (HLB) diseases caused by the vascular bacteria Xylella fasctidiosa and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus; education/consultancy services to researchers, growers and government officials of countries in Latin America and Caribe (through FAO), north America, Africa, Europe, and Asia; participation of scientific/technical meetings coordinated by phytopathological societies, citrus grower associations, and governmental organizations. MAIN CONTRIBUTIONS – help to sequence and decipher the entire genome of X. fastidiosa; created and coordinated a professional master course ‘Management of Pests and diseases of Citrus’ (http://www.fundecitrus.com.br/english/); guided 21 MSc and doctorate students; published 73 articles, most in renowned scientific journals such as Nature, Genome Research, Plant Disease, Phytopathology, with the results helping to improve and make more sustainable the control of CVC and HLB. By 28 Nov 2021, published articles had been cited 2940 times resulting in a H index of 23 (https://scholar.google.com.br/citations?hl=en&user=ltA0C5MAAAAJ&view_op=list_works&sortby=pubdate). The most recent article (Modeling ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’ Movement Within Citrus Plants” was selected as Editor’s Pick from the October issue of Phytopathology, the flagship journal of plant pathology field, published by The American Phytopathological Society.
