After graduation, I became a hard working food service desk worker which taught me a lot about working with different kinds of people. As an open minded, empathetic, generous and idealistic person I found it enjoyable talking to coworkers and customers bringing about happiness or a deep conversation. Happiness through helping, gaining appreciation from my work, excelling a new subject well enough to teach it forward and doing work that match my ideals are the main motivators for me. The main ideals that I follow are honesty, fairness and co-work. When I'm not working I gain peace of mind mainly by watching nature, letting thoughts wander, playing bass or through frisbeegolf.My professional career as a bio engineer has been a slow start filled with dreaming and ups and downs. The first summer contract and the workplace where I conducted my bachelors thesis was University of Helsinki. The task was to repeat a part of a study involving the stool samples of Parkinson's disease patients and the extraction of DNA from these samples. It was my first touch in the research world and after few months of work extracting DNA from these over 100 samples, I managed to have them all pooled up in one small tube that had to be carried from the other end of the lab to the other and into an IlluminaNextSeq500 reader. It was quite exciting holding all the previous work in my hand.Next opportunity in my own field was offered when I worked as a laboratory technician operating fermentations of different scale at ROAL Oy R&D. Beginning was a lot of work in how to schedule and overlap tasks so that the work wouldn't start to lag behind. Every minute of every task had to be optimized. Learning to work like a clock was stressing at first but gave myself great satisfaction when I learned the way. Interest in Biology and more specifically cell factories has guided me forward though I have yet to come into conclusion of what exactly would I like to accomplish in this area. Would I be a contributor in finding ways to manufacture vaccine meant to treat allergies or perhaps a fermentation operator to a research team finding new ways to modify organisms to our benefit. Perhaps creating scaffolding for mammal cells to grow artificial organs in, or a fermentation process suitable to moon or mars colony. The study of gut could offer a view on how to manufacture the perfect fecal transport in the future to help people with gut disease or to help to adapt a more plant based diet. There are many meaningful tasks out there and I'm here to find one... or two.-Simo Soila, BSc Biomedicine
