About Simon Carter

I have worked in the not for profit sector for over 40 years. From supporting former Chief Scout Bear Grylls in my role as Head of Media Relations at The Scout Association to masterminding the Cub Scouts’ successful centenary media campaign, I am prepared for most things.I am a passionate believer in the power of volunteering; I have advised Trustees of many UK charities and supported youth workers based in inner city London. I am currently the managing Trustee of my local Scout Group. Professionally, I have delivered key projects in the fields of customer service; youth development, volunteer management and Communications. In 2016 I lead the team that planned and delivered the Media Relations work of the Cubs100 Campaign. In 2017 the Third Sector Awards recognised the Cubs100 Campaign as the Communications Campaign of the year and the CorpComms Awards recognised Cubs100 as the Media Relations campaign of the year. My Management roles in the voluntary sector have been many and varied but never dull. In the mid 1990’s I was shot at by rebels in Albania and lead a team that organised a week-long trip to Disneyland for 6,000 teenagers. More recently I have dodged venomous snakes in Africa, ridden in a helicopter gunship, dined with the King of Sweden, helped the Duchess of Cambridge make bread in a snowstorm and filmed in Snowdonia with Bear Grylls. In late 2017 I volunteered to lead the Media Relations and Communications team for the WorldSkills event based in Abu Dhabi. I undertook this function again in Kazan, Russian in 2019.When not working, I try to get the most out of the solar panels on the roof of my house and enjoy cutting wood for my wood burners. I grow vegetables on my allotment and visit battlefield sites around the world. I am married with twin sons and live in Hertfordshire. I am a Member of the Charted Institute of Public Relations and a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development. I studied at Kingston and the Open University. My undergraduate training in Geomorphology and Ecology has given me a life-long interest in travel.

    I am responsible for external media communications for this membership organisation of 640,000 adults and young people. Responsibilities included national and regional media relations, integrated communications management around key announcements and coordinating media work for Bear Grylls the organisation’s Chief Scout. • Devising, Leading and delivering the media element of the current “The Great Indoors” campaign generating extensive print broadcast and online coverage in National, Regional, trade and local media outlets. The project is still ongoing• Devising, leading and delivering the media event that profiled the Duchess of Cambridge in her first public appearance as a Scout Volunteer in 2012 through to her attending our public “early years” event in 2019. Harnessing the Duchess brand has enabled us to use new channels and reach new audiences. • Supporting and guiding the Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, in his media work to ensure he is “on brand” and “on message” on all occasions when he represents the Movement. I also support our Scout Ambassadors such as Tim Peake and Helen Glover with this type of work • Managing the response to critical incidents that have the potential to damage the reputation of the Movement and minimising the impact on the organisation of these events • Devising, planning and delivering the integrated communications activity around the announcement of the alternative additional Promise across internal and external channels. • Devising and implementing the concept of young spokespeople to enable the Scout Association to present youth face for PR and Marketing activity. This innovative approach to spokesperson management gives us an edge over others in the sector when demonstrating the value of what we deliver for young people as them telling their authentic stories
