International Nuclear Services (INS) is the world leader in transportation of nuclear material, from category 1 high security shipments to spent fuel from test reactors. My role involved providing marine advice to all departments within INS and assisting with projects and planning for current and future transport activity including carrying out port assessment visits. I attended HSE and LFE meetings. I also undertook PR and media work and gave presentations promoting PNTL and INS transport. I attended the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) in Vienna as part of the INS team within the UK delegation to IAEA and have previously been an observer in the IMO. I have been the PNTL representative at the Informal Tanker Operators Safety Forum (ITOSF).

Barrow-In-Furness

I spent 9 months seconded to James Fisher & sons Barrow office where I ran the company’s Behavioural Based Safety system (BBS). This involved preparing and circulating BBS observations as well as providing the vessels with support to enable the crews to carry out observations. I also developed the system to make it easier to use and improve understanding among shipboard staff. I also improved the BBS feedback system by devising and introducing a better laid out and easier to understand newsletter. Where necessary I conducted crew training for BBS as well as Risk Assessment training and Environmental Awareness training. I also reviewed and prepared various management manuals including Shipboard Marine Emergency Plan, Shipboard Operations Manual and the company Health, Safety and Environmental Manual. I also compiled a handbook for nutritional advice and healthy eating.
