About Simon Downs

Working as a Maintenance Engineer and Team Lead at Mondelez International in Ringwood I have been exposed to a huge variety of technology and practices across a manufacturing plant with both aging and cutting-edge technologies. This role involved day to day running of a team of electricians performing both reactive and preventative maintenance. This time has given me a greater appreciation for PLC systems, both Allan Bradley and Siemens, electrical safety systems and team leading a work force through many tasks. These include daily meetings, ordering parts and liaising with external suppliers and integrating with many projects teams around the factory to ensure information is passed through all key parties. My previous experience of being an live event technician for many years has lead me to be an active member of any team that I am involved in. Skills in AutoCAD and SolidWorks are aided by many years of work with the installation of lighting, video and networking systems with the need to think in a 3D space and have realistic expectations in what is possible in a real world environment. I have a great deal of experience in problem solving, team work, client liaising and project management.Recently a focus has been on a strong engineering development through the completion of a Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics) at Swinburne. The degree was focused in Mechatronics, Control and Automation Engineering through subjects such as dynamics, embedded systems, along with programming languages (such as C, C# and Python), and how to apply them to real world projects.Running a small business requires great self motivation skills and the ability to communicate both verbally and through written communication and is shown by my ability to fit into all team types while still being capable of working alone.I am interested in working environments that challenge me and push me to improve both myself and my understanding of the world.

Listed skills include Festivals, Live Events, Lighting, Video, and 50 others.

Managing Director

Dtwo

Melbourne, Australia

As a sole trader everything from budgeting to risk management, project trouble shooting to job quoting, client liaising, both existing and future clients, and many other skills which I had previously learned with 8+ years in the industry come to the forefront when setting up a new small business. The events industry is built on individuals who understand that there are no excuses when it comes to completing a job on time. "The show must go on" is the saying and it is true, do whatever needs to be done to get the show working. From this point of view time management is crucial to ensuring project criteria is met and all stake holders are happy in the process. Working as part of a team is required no matter the size of the job, and working building a company to support myself has shown me that team building is key. Building a company has increased my skillset to include some of the following areas:- Time management- Communication skills- Problem solving- Client negotiation skills- Stress management- Project delivery- OH&S awareness and risk management- Analytical thinking- Team work, both leading and taking directive- On the job training of junior team membersRecently a shift towards development of products through 3D modelling and design has seen my workload diversify dramatically and I look to build on these skills in the future.

Nov 2014 - Oct 2019

Robotics Engineer - Electrical Team Lead

Ringwood, Melbourne, Australia

Having experienced a planning role at Mondelez for a short period an opportunity arose when the previous team leader was offered a position on a project and I was asked to step up to fill his shoes alongside continuing my current role. This previous team leader had 17 years of experience with the plant so the knowledge gap of how equipment and processes were handled needed to be filled quickly. I feel working with a trades workforce is all about trust and the 3 months prior to this role I was able to build a strong connection with all members of the team. This role included planning for maintenance, investigation of breakdowns, day to day running of a team of 11, team briefing and debriefing tasks, daily area meetings, reporting to senior management, leave and staff planning, payroll and many other tasks. This role has given me the opportunity to grow in my understanding of how an industrial plant works, through both electrical, sensor, actuator and motor drives for example and network infrastructure, PLC, critical control network infrastructure and virtual machine management. Mondelez is heavily integrated in the SAP network and through this role I have gained a solid understanding of notification creation, work order planning and purchasing and stock management while being able to generate reports to ensure effective use of my teams time.

While at EVX I worked under a final year student, with a team of 3 others to develop this section of the project in a very tight time frame.
