My role as a climate change specialist at Natural England involves using an understanding of the likely direct and indirect impacts of climate change to devise appropriate adaptation and mitigation for and by the natural environment. This involves; remaining up to date with the latest climate change science and being able to interpret and explain it to a range of different audiences, undertaking climate change risk assessments to determine the potential threats and opportunities that climate change poses to the natural environment; working with academics to improve our knowledge of the impacts and effectiveness of our responses to climate change; working with colleagues to ensure that climate change is considered in protected site designation, notification, conservation objective setting and site management, and working with land owners to ensure that climate change adaptation and mitigation is embedded in their land management.The work involves engaging with governmental bodies and NGOs, academics and practitioners, land owners and advisors to ensure that climate change adaptation and mitigation is delivered on the ground through appropriate policy, designations, incentives and advice.
