I have over 20 years experience in dispute resolution, having qualified in 1995 and spent three years as a Senior Lecturer in Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. Since 2003, I have specialised in Financial Regulatory Defence work for clients in some of the largest investigations, civil recovery action and prosecutions brought by financial regulators.I am experienced in representing directors and individuals throughout the investigation and prosecution process; including search orders, PACE interviews and deferred prosecution agreements. I have been instructed in two of the largest cases ever brought by the Serious Fraud Office against Fortune 500 PLCs.I am highly experienced in all aspects of HMRC investigations from initial enquiries, assessments, reconsiderations and reviews; through to appeals to the First Tier and Upper Tier Tax Tribunals. I have been particularly successful in persuading HMRC to withdraw a number of high value assessments against Road Hauliers under the Excise Goods (Holding Movement and Duty Point) Regulations 2010.I act for clients in all areas of FCA supervision. These include preparing full compliance reports preparation and submission; representing clients at FCA interviews, and preparing and drafting applications for Financial Conduct Authority under the regulated mortgage contract provisions on behalf of mortgage lenders.I am currently instructed in largest ever appeal to the Tax Tribunal concerning assessments raised by HMRC alleging the fraudulent evasion of excise duty and VAT in the sum of £30m. I am also instructed in an appeal by a wholesaler in respect of denied input tax and assessments by HMRC of in excess of £4m on the grounds of a connection to MTIC fraud.I am regularly instructed by FTSE 500 companies and SMEs to review and update their financial regulatory compliance policies for Anti-Money Laundering, bribery, prevention of facilitation of tax evasion and counter-terrorist financing.I am also instructed in appeals to the First Tier Tax Tribunal and Upper Tribunal relating to the Construction Industry Scheme, the scope of movement guarantees and penalties arising from late submission of VAT returns.
