Profile bio

About Simon Hedges

I have over 35yrs of experience of species conservation and protected area management, human–wildlife conflict mitigation, countering the illegal wildlife trade, conservation-related research and surveys, monitoring and evaluation, and wildlife policy formulation, including the writing and implementation of action plans. Much of my time since 1988 has been spent in Asia and, from 2007, Asia and Africa. I spent the 1990s living and working in protected areas in Java, advising on their management with a particular focus on ungulates, wild dogs, and leopards. From 1998, I focused on elephants, particularly on the development of reliable monitoring methods, human–elephant conflict and, since 2004, the ivory trade and the resulting illegal killing of elephants. I worked for WCS for 18yrs, working to conserve elephants in partnership with other NGOs, communities, and governments, and ultimately coordinating WCS’s elephant conservation work in Asia and Africa. From Feb 2018 - Nov 2021, I worked as an independent consultant. I now work on conservation strategy and impact for ZSL.Notable achievements include:> Successful management of complex conservation projects, including in-country management of 50 staff in Indonesia and remote management of projects from the UK.> Long-track record of successful fundraising including from the Darwin Initiative, the UK’s Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, Rainforest Trust, USFWS, Science for Nature and People Partnership, CEPF, NGS, numerous zoo grant programs, and private donors.> I took a lead role in standardizing the approach to monitoring elephant populations, pioneering the use of fecal DNA methods, and writing two of the standard books on monitoring elephants.> My work helped move the CITES Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants Program from its original emphasis on counting living elephants to monitoring elephant poaching rates, thus providing more immediately policy-relevant advice. I also helped develop and improve CITES National Ivory Action Plan process (a rare case of CITES ‘showing some teeth’).> Working with WCS and local partners, I set up some of the first elephant-specific anti-poaching teams in Asia.> Working with local communities and NGOs, I successfully promoted an evidence-based approach to mitigating human–wildlife conflict, demonstrating that it can achieve very significant reductions in crop raiding by elephants at the protected area scale.> I worked with governments and their NGO partners to produce National Elephant Action Plans, including in Malawi, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

Listed skills include Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Nature Conservation, Survey Design, and 46 others.
