About Simon Marshall

By original training and professional experience I am a research scientist with a long standing interest in solving a range of problems in computational chemistry and physics, mainly arising in chemical engineering contexts. I have over my career published a large volume of material in national and international journals and have presented at many conferences and other forums over that time. I have worked in academia, private sector laboratories and as an officer of the Commonwealth. The problems I have worked on in my research include:Calculation of reaction and phase equilibria in complex mixtures;Parameterization of nonlinear implicit models defined by simultaneous equations;Solution of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations describing various transport processes in porous media; Transformation of slowly-converging Fourier series arising in the analytical solutions of problems in potential theory.I have also had a lifelong interest in music, and achieved a high degree of proficiency as a performer on the pianoforte, with a particular interest in the baroque and classical repertoire. I have had significant experience as an accompanist, and in the performance of chamber music.

Listed skills include Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Modeling, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, and 13 others.

Simon Marshall work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Independent Scholar

Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Having retired from the W.A. Public Service, I enrolled as an undergraduate student of European languages: Italian, Spanish, Latin, and Ancient Greek, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. I subsequently obtained a Master of Translation Studies degree, specialising in translation between English and Italian.

Feb 2020 - Dec 2022

Environmental Officer

W.A. Department Of Water And Environmental Regualation

Perth, Western Australiia

My responsibilities in this role involved the application of numerical models for atmospheric pollutant dispersion, in the context of environmental impact assessments.

Jan 2013 - Jan 2020

Senior Research Scientist

Csiro Mathematical And Information Sciences

Melbourne, Australia

My main interest was in mathematical modeling of nonlinear diffusion processes in porous media, related to resource management/recovery, environmental remediation, and advanced materials development.

2008 - 2012 ~4 yrs

Research Scientist (Fixed Term)

Csiro Land And Water

Floreat, Western Australia

In the context of the development of mathematical models for microbial enhanced oil recovery, I carried out a detailed analysis of the physical constraints imposed on this process by pressure, temperature, salinity, and the characteristics of the porous media.

2007 - 2008 ~1 yr

Research Scientist

Electrochemical Systems, Inc

In this capacity I carried out research, as a subcontractor at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a variety of topics. These included mathematical modeling of carbon dioxide enhanced coalbed methane recovery, and thermodynamic properties of geologically significant fluid mixtures.

2001 - 2007 ~6 yrs

Research Scientist

Oak Ridge Associated Universities

Oak Ridge, Tennessee

As a Research Scientist employed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities in the Chemical Sciences Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, I was involved in EPRI-funded research directed towards the development of equations of state and thermodynamic models to describe the vapor-liquid transfer of electrolytes under conditions prevailing in steam cycles of nuclear- and fossil fuel-powered power plants. I also participated in setting up a laboratory in the Environmental Sciences Division to investigate the formation of methane hydrate under simulated sea-floor conditions.

1996 - 2000 ~4 yrs

Associate Professor Of Physical Chemistry

Department Of Chemistry, University Of Natal

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

In this capacity I had responsibility for teaching courses in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and spectroscopy, and conducted research on the kinetics of electrochemical passivation of lead in sulfuric acid.

1994 - 1996 ~2 yrs

Research Fellow (Fixed Term)

Murdoch University

Murdoch, Western Australia

I was involved in an AMIRA-funded project involving experimental and theoretical investigations of the thermodynamics of concentrated aluminate solutions arising in the Bayer process for production of alumina. I made significant contributions towards the development of a novel apparatus and procedures for isopiestic measurements of water activities in such solutions, and developed computer programs for analysis of experimental results and parameterization of equations of state for such solutions.

1993 - 1994 ~1 yr

Lecturer In Physical Chemistry (Fixed Term)

Department Of Chemistry, University Of Western Australia

Perth, Western Australia

During this appointment I carried out research on various theoretical aspects of electrochemistry, including double-layer theory, kinetics of electrochemical passivation processes under mixed kinetic control, and distribution of current in industrial electrochemical cells with resistive and/or porous electrodes. My teaching responsibilities included delivery of courses on chemical thermodynamics, kinetics, and instrumental methods of chemical analysis.

1990 - 1993 ~3 yrs

Post-Doctoral Appointee

Chemical Technology Division, Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne, Illinois, Usa

I carried out applied experimental work on the electrodeposition of metallic uranium from high-temperature molten salt electrolytes. This resulted in the award of a US Patent. At the conclusion of that project, I was transferred to the Advanced Molten-Salt Battery Program, in which I worked towards the development of theoretical models for the molten sodium-metal chloride battery, and the design of conductivity probes for the characterization of porous battery electrode materials.
