I am the UNESCO Chair in International Education and Development in the Centre for International Education Research, University of Nottingham and a member of Nottingham's UNESCO-UNEVOC Centre as well as Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.Previously I was Director of the Human Resources Development Research Programme of the South African Human Sciences Research Council and remain a research associate of the HSRC.From 2006 to 2012 I was the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Development, a major international peer-reviewed journal on education's relationship with broader processes of economic, political, societal and cultural change. I am also author of the Routledge textbook on education and development, and co-editor of the Routledge Handbook in this area. I was also lead editor of the Springer Handbook of Vocational Education and Training.I have published on a number of aspects of education - development links, including higher and vocational education and training systems in Africa, the skills development processes of micro and small enterprises, and the role of aid in shaping education. I advise a number of government departments (most notably in South Africa) and international agencies and was a member of the Secretariat of the Working Group for International Cooperation in Skills Development from 1996 to 2008.I am currently working on VET and sustainable human development; on skills development in Southern and East Africa; on the education and training experiences of migrants; and on HE and development in Africa.Specialties: international education, development, aid policy, skills development, higher education and development, vocational education and training, Southern Africa, research, academic writing
