Microbiological/Materials Laboratory Technician
Laboratory Analyst (Bba - Analytical)
Laboratory Analyst (Wines & Spirits)
As of January 2017, I transferred to the Wines & Spirits department, undertaking the routine analysis and sending reports to clients. Furthermore, I assisted with updating and testing the LIMS system to include all the techniques we perform, and ensuring the data shown on the final reports fit our requirements. To assist with my training and development, I completed 3 different WSET awards, Level 1 in Wines; Level 1 in Spirits and Level 2 in Wines & Spirits.Additionally, I was involved in developing a method for testing the volatile oils found in juniper berries, as well as developing a new method for testing total and volatile acids in spirts based on an existing OIV method.
Laboratory Analyst (Bba - Analytical)
I conducted a range of wet lab techniques following both EU reference methods and UKAS accredited methods in the analysis of alcoholic beverages, predominantly in the Beer & Malt section. This included determination of the alcohol level, the Carbon Dioxide levels, the amount of carbohydrates present, and measuring the bitterness to name a few.Further to this, I had been trained on a variety of techniques specific to the analysis of Wines & Spirits, to assist during the busiest time of the year. While some methods from the two departments overlapped, the methods specific to Wines & Spirits include, but are not limited to Flame Photometry, A.A., and Microbiology.I also completed the triangle test training, allowing me to take part in triangle test panel tasting. This test is used to determine whether a consumer can detect a difference between two similar products, or if an external factor (e.g. a potential taint) has had an effect on a product. In March 2015, I completed training in methods relating to the nitrosamine content of alcoholic beverages and their raw materials. This included using GC-TEA to determine the ATNC content, and GC-MS to determine NDMA.In late 2015 and early 2016, I was trained on and took over the running of methods using HPLC, and was involved in method development activities using this new equipment. I took over the running of Sweeteners & Preservatives on a range of sample types, as well as Hop Acid content on beers. I developed a method to detect and quantify sugars in a variety of sample types, including wine, cider and beer, using HPLC-RI. Furthermore, I was involved in developing this method further to include additional sugars, and began to develop a method to detect organic acids in wine using a Diode Array detector.
Shop Floor Assistant
Having invited me back after my gap year abroad, the manager gave me all the responsibilities I had before I left. The manager had asked me to work more regularly, but still part-time in the showroom, helping to obtain leads on replacement kitchens and bathrooms, and gaining a larger product knowledge within the store.
Gap Year
From September to December 2008, I was on an educational programme, learning about the history of the country, learning the language and touring the country. From January to March 2009, I helped teach English to primary school children, in a small town in the north of the country, while also helping to run programmes for the children in the community centre. At the ned of March 2009, I attended a 10-day training course learning first aid. Following this course to June 2009, I was a volunteer on an ambulance with Magen David Adom, the Israeli medical emergency and blood service, which has links to the British Red Cross Society.
Cashier
For a little under two years, I worked at Homebase, Purley Way as a cashier. I was also given the responsibility of mixing paint for customers. I had the opportunity to improve my customer service skills on the service desk, answering telephones, processing refunds and exchanges, and placing customer orders. I left at the end of August 2008, as I was taking a gap year in Israel, but the then manager immediately invited me back on my return home.
