Operations Technician
While still studying for my PPO at college I started work at SITA Tees Valley as an Operations Technician. After an extensive 6 month period of training I then took care of the day to day running of the energy from waste facility. This included two boilers and a single steam turbine and all their auxiliary support systems. My duties included• Site checks to take readings and to observe the running of the plant, checking for abnormal activity to ensure normal operations are carried out and any problems are swiftly diagnosed and dealt with.• Include any issues in the shift log system, this was for the other shifts to recognise the problems and to use in handovers, I then raised an order to resolve these issues.• Operation of overhead cranes to charge waste into the furnace for incineration and driving of plant vehicles, including a fork lift truck, telehandler and dumper truck.• Carry out routine maintenance such as cleaning strainers and clearing blockages, following safe working procedures to ensure it is correctly isolated before carrying out these jobs safely.• Work the desk using the DCS screens, answered radio calls and controlling the man power to ensure the efficient running of the shift. This was all part of my progression to become a Senior Operator. When working the DCS I had to make important decisions to ensure safe, controlled running of the plant and to build up trends, which helps to identify process upsets early.
Painter
I worked on a high hazard COMAH industrial plant originally as a painter, progressing into various other disciplines when needed. My basic painting duties included• Working to the four coat system on pipe work and structural steel work carrying out all the prep work such as blasting, needle-gunning and solvent washing• as well as applying paint by either brush, roller or spray; stencilling and applying non slip floor coatings.Whilst at Hertel I attended various training courses to enable me to be multi-disciplined, such as driving a MEWP, four bolt training, breathing air systems and confined space training. That training then enabled me to carry out class ‘B’ entries into the sites ‘cyanide cubicles’ and manning the breathing air apparatus from bottled trailers or the normal plant air. I also got the chance to work with other trades, helping to bolt pipework together with pipefitters, and replace pumps and valves with mechanical fitters. As a result of this I have came to identify the type of gasket used and sizes of bolts etc. I also have knowledge and understanding of how other trades work, such as welders, scaffolders and riggers, and joined in to help overcome problems that arose during activities.
Painter
I completed a number of trips offshore on the Ravenspurn North and Miller platforms for Cape, tasks included all prep work, needle gunning, blasting, solvent washing, and then the application of the necessary paint in the four coat system (primer, aluminium, high build & finish), either by brush, roller or spray. These tasks were carried out either on deck or from rope access. Items painted included pipes, steel framework, crane pedestals and tanks.
