I'm a Professor of International Political Economy and Business at the University of York. My doctoral research was on EU defence and security, bureaucracy and strategy. I continue to undertake research on EU security and defence policy, and European integration. I'm an Advance HE Senior Fellow and a former UK Bologna expert. The Bologna Process aims to develop the principles and practice of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).My pedagogical and scholarship interests include the impact of Generative AI on teaching, learning and assessment; use of social capital in diverse classroom settings; internationalism, environmental sustainability, and the university as an institution dedicated to the public good. My research focuses on the 'geopolitical turn' by Ursula von der Leyen's European Commission, and how this is impacted by Russia's illegal war on Ukraine. The EU, which began as an inward-looking peace project, is now obliged to confront critical external challenges in a volatile and multipolar world.
