About Simon Sweeney
I'm a Professor of International Political Economy and Business at the University of York. My doctoral research was on EU defence and security, bureaucracy and strategy. I continue to undertake research on EU security and defence policy, and European integration. I'm an Advance HE Senior Fellow and a former UK Bologna expert. The Bologna Process aims to develop the principles and practice of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).My pedagogical and scholarship interests include the impact of Generative AI on teaching, learning and assessment; use of social capital in diverse classroom settings; internationalism, environmental sustainability, and the university as an institution dedicated to the public good. My research focuses on the 'geopolitical turn' by Ursula von der Leyen's European Commission, and how this is impacted by Russia's illegal war on Ukraine. The EU, which began as an inward-looking peace project, is now obliged to confront critical external challenges in a volatile and multipolar world.

As a member of the UK Bologna Experts committee I acted as a consultant to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and HE reform in accordance with the principles and practices of the Bologna Process. I developed expertise on quality assurance and internationalisation, especially mobility. I contributed to an evaluation exercise for Aalto Business School in Helsinki on teaching practice and quality assurance, with a special interest in module descriptors, learning outcomes, and assessment. My work as a Bologna Expert began with GuildHE, and later through association with Universities UK and the Russell Group.

Head Of Programme Ma International Studies
This was a part-time distance learning programme run with partners in Czestochowa, Poland and Osaka and Tokyo in Japan. It was a brilliant opportunity for me; I learnt so much from working on this degree. I particularly liked Japan, a wonderful country, and the students were excellent. The MAIS produced around 130 graduates, the last cohort beginning in 2008.
