Simon is an energy management consultant based in Brighton and have been working within the building services and energy management industries for more than 25 years.During this time he has undertaken energy management studies throughout the UK and Europe, in addition to advising clients on energy policy and strategy, becoming a Chartered Member of the Energy Institute, a registered consultant with the Carbon Trust and accredited by CIBSE as both an ESOS Lead Assessor and Low Carbon Energy Assessor for the production of Display Energy Certificates. The majority of his time is spent providing energy surveys and technical advice to large private sector organisations as well as within the NHS and Education sectors. The survey reports provided include a list of energy efficiency recommendations as well as internal operation and behavioural changes which could reduce energy consumption. The measures identified are ranked in terms of either simple payback, rate of return or life cycle cost assessment, depending on the method best suited to the particular organisation, to allow the client to channel any capital funding into areas where they will see the most benefit. The survey process will generally begin with analysis of the organisation’s energy consumption over a historical period to show overarching trends of energy use and benchmarking this data against specific variables, including occupancy numbers and hours, production data and degree days. The level of technical detail will depend on the organisations requirements and to whom the report is to be presented. With larger organisations, an initial scoping exercise will identify the best methodology to take in terms of the surveys and may include a rational for sampling where there are large numbers of sites, based on, for example, the function, age, size and location of the sites.
