About Simon Tucker

Hi, I am Simon👋 I have been working in civil engineering for over 30 years, including 5 years in New Zealand. I am passionate about the environment and sustainable development. I am a Chartered civil engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers and enjoy providing solutions to the technical and environmental challenges associated with land development opportunities.I am a reflective problem solver who enjoys creative thinking when developing pragmatic solutions and am at my best in a dynamic and collaborative environment. My knowledge of the planning and regulatory aspects of development, coupled with my design and construction experience of leading teams engaged through the full life cycle of a project, means I am often able to add value by developing innovative solutions to mitigate otherwise prohibitive development costs for our clients.Climate change, loss of bio-diversity and infrastructure resilience are huge challenges for society and we need innovative engineering solutions to deliver the most benefit, whilst having the least environmental impact. Working closely with our planning, and urban design teams, we are helping the UK progress towards Net Zero by 2050, supporting a portfolio of clients across the energy, commercial and residential sectors and encouraging decarbonisation along the way.Whether its using recycled/modified material for earthworks, warm mix asphalts for new pavements or developing a sustainable drainage system that has multiple functions, of recreation , flood management and bio-diversity; our talented teams collaborate closely to drive change. In 1828 Thomas Tredgold ( The Institution of Civil Engineers) defined civil engineering as:"...the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man".Time may have marched on, but making the most of the finite resources we have has never been more important!👍Our engineering teams bring innovative thinking to create beautiful places, enhancing the built and natural environment in a way that positively affects people’s lives. The expertise that we offer has expanded from planning, to urban design, environmental consultancy advice, evolving to economics, heritage expertise, transport and infrastructure. Our expertise now spans the entire development process. Please feel free to get in touch!simon.tucker@pegasusgroup.co.uk

Simon Tucker Work Experience Details
  • Pegasus Group
    Director Of Infrastructure
Pegasus Group May 2023 - Present
    Cambridge, England, United Kingdom
I am the regional Pegasus Group infrastructure service line lead for the East of England and beyond! Part of my current role includes business development and supporting our strategic growth plan. Working closely with our infrastructure teams across the UK, I lead teams engaged on technical delivery. We work across many sectors including renewable energy, residential and commercial. The scope can vary greatly, from supporting clients with site viability assessments, site promotion, master planning/securing planning consent/discharge of conditions, through to full detailed design to secure technical approvals (S38, S278, S104 agreements) and build out.During my career, I have built and led teams, supporting colleagues to become professionally qualified. I am a Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE), and have recently become a Professional Reviewer for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Being able to shape and provide an environment that allows our diverse and talented teams to flourish, is very rewarding. Not one to plateau myself, in 2019, I enrolled on the Construction Engineering Master of Studies (MSt), at Cambridge University - at the ripe old age of 50 and successfully graduated in 2021, despite all Covid-19 would throw at us. 💪 My Dissertation examined the potential inhibitors preventing the wider use of modular housing.
  • Stantec
    Director Of Civil Engineering
    Stantec Oct 2013 - May 2023
I joined Hannah Reed Associates in 2013, which was subsequently acquired by Peter Brett Associates in 2015, which in turn was acquired by Stantec in 2019. I joined initially as Associate, becoming a Senior Associate in 2016 and Director Civil Engineering for Stantec UK (Infrastructure and Buildings) in 2019. I was the Business Centre Discipline Lead (BCDL) for the Midlands and Eastern Region, overseeing and supporting development of technical capability and capacity across our service delivery teams in Northampton, Cambridge and Birmingham and providing support to the BC Operational Lead on commercial performance. I led infrastructure delivery on a number of notable projects including the first phases of the East Kettering Sustainable Urban Extension (5,500 new homes), and Brightwell Lakes residential development ( 2,000 new homes, school and local centre), Suffolk.https://hanwoodpark.co.uk/library/newsletters/2015-winter.pdfhttps://brightwelllakes.co.uk/development
  • Wormald Burrows Partnership Ltd
    Associate Director
    Wormald Burrows Partnership Ltd 2010 - 2013
    Biggleswade, England, United Kingdom
I was responsible for technical delivery on predominantly residential schemes for national house builders. This included taking projects through planning , and preparing supporting documentation to enable discharge of planning conditions; Flood Risk Assessments, Drainage Strategies, Utility Assessments, Earthwork Strategies. Key achievements included negotiations with approving bodies, notably the Environment Agency to secure a departure from their Groundwater Protection Policy by developing and agreeing an innovative treatment solution for management of post development residential run off . Other achievements, included successful negotiations with National Highways (Highways England) to agree a Departure from Standard for a new Motorway Service Area off the A1.
  • Wsp
    Associate
    Wsp Jan 2008 - Jul 2010
    Cambridge, England, United Kingdom
I joined WSP a week after the financial crash of 2008, a pretty grim time for the construction sector (and every other sector).😒 I predominantly worked on pre-planning services, preparing FRA's and Sustainable Drainage Strategies for Clients across the residential, commercial sectors including the educational sector, under the UK Governments 'Building Schools for the Future' initiative.Lesson learnt? Timing is everything!
  • Sweco
    Senior Engineer
    Sweco 2005 - 2008
    Cambridge, England, United Kingdom
I worked on a range of land development projects and was responsible for the day to day management of a small team of technicians and engineers. I worked closely with our structural engineering and environmental/geotechnical teams. The projects were varied, ranging from large commercial distribution centres, medium sized residential developments to bespoke projects, including an equine gallops and a dog training centre for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
  • Atkins
    Senior Engineer
    Atkins 2001 - 2005
    Cambridge, England, United Kingdom
Atkins were appointed as the framework consultant for Cambridgeshire County Council and were responsible for providing professional services for highway design and maintenance. Employed as a Senior Engineer, I was responsible for delivering highway upgrades, and safety improvements on the County highway network. Examples include, junction upgrades to improve capacity, curve realignment/reprofiling to address safety issues and upgrades to highway drainage. I also delivered a number of Safe Routes to School projects and also delivered other capital projects such as a Household Waste Recycling Centre and a programme of VMS ( Variable Message Sign) installation across Cambridge City.
  • Aurecon
    Civil Engineer
    Aurecon 1997 - 2001
    Wellington Nz
I worked for Aurecon ( formerly Connell Wagner) as a design technologist /engineer on a wide range of multidisciplinary projects through out the North Island. Notable projects included the Arohata Woman's Prison for the NZ Department of Correction ( bulk earthworks, new car park, drainage, and security fencing) in very difficult terrain with poor soil conditions. Other projects included a major junction upgrade in Lower Hutt, to provide a signalised roundabout and link road within the Central Business District. I also worked on a number of State Highway improvement schemes for Transit New Zealand ( now the New Zealand Transport Agency - responsible for the State Highway Network).
  • Torbay Council
    Civil Engineering Technologist
    Torbay Council 1993 - 1997
    Torquay, England, United Kingdom
Torbay Borough Council, under an agency agreement to Devon County Council, was responsible for all aspects of maintenance on the adopted road network. I gained a great deal of experience of condition surveys, interpreting SCRIM and Deflectograph data and using the results to inform the design of pavement overlays, reconstruction or design of surface dressing. I undertook topographical surveys, commissioned pavement and drainage investigations including working with the County Council's material testing laboratory to assess soil properties and residual pavement life. I also gained a great deal of experience of contract administration, supervision of construction/maintenance activities and traffic management/NRSWA requirements. This experience also taught me softer skills, particularly effective engagement/communication skills when dealing with the public and other key stakeholders.
