As good content becomes ever more prevalent and audiences have less time to consume it, it's time for businesses to start thinking more like a publisher, establishing robust editorial principles which deliver quality content.This has been my mantra since setting up The Content Equation in 2016; a mantra shaped by 18 years of working in editorial and communications roles within the accountancy and legal sectors. My current client roster now sees me involved with industries as diverse as professional services, events management and sports administration.Prior to a spell as the senior communications manager at the law firm Shoosmiths, I spent most of my career in various thought leadership, corporate communications and PR roles at KPMG. In recent years, my work focus has been on trying to effect a change in the typical corporate approach to communications, advocating paying far greater attention to the calibre of the content being generated, as opposed to merely the communication techniques used for disseminating that content. Throughout my career, I have developed strong writing and media liaison skills but much of my time at Shoosmiths and KPMG was spent engaging senior leadership on the merits of moving to a more opinion-driven communications strategy. Such work requires strong writing skills as well as an ability to understand the business issues that clients face. The end result is something that looks part in-house journalist, part communications advisor.
