My day to day role involved conducting shallow earth site investigations via hand auger methods up to 10 metres in depth. The soil was extracted and logged on site and then transcribed later into CoreGS. I liaised regularly with engineers and site clearance personnel to ensure the job was conducted safely, efficiently and to specifications. On occasion I was required to install piezometers in urban locations inaccessible to machine rigs. When not on site I assisted in the soil testing laboratory preparing samples for consolidation and shrink/swell testing.

I am responsible for performing an overview log of delivered core for the last 24 hours from all production rigs and report on the main zones of interest for corporate level review. Further from this, the bulk of my duties consist of the accurate and detailed logging of underground core which arrives on a daily basis, combined with sampling ore zones and other target zones as necessary. I am required to update sections and perform other data entry to ensure information is properly shared across departments. I assist with sampling accuracy and error correction to preserve the integrity of downstream results.

My primary role at BHP Nickel West is the optimal recovery of nickel ore from the pit, and estimating ore type percentages for accurate delivery to ROM destinations. This is achieved through visual inspection and close coordination with excavator and truck operators. Other duties that are required include; drone flyovers of the ROM stockpiles to track delivered/crushed tonnages and ‘RC’ grade control logging via acQuire, sample assessment and dispatch. The position requires vigilance and focus for extended periods of time, as well as superb communication and people management skills. Validation of the previous day’s work necessitates competent computer and MS office skills.

Drakelands Mine, Plymouth

While at Drakelands Mine, my main focus as an operator was to maintain the smooth and efficient running of the Fines Gravity Separation area. This required me to be flexible in my work and prioritise tasks on-the-fly, while still maintaining regular schedules and reports to superiors. In addition to being the sole shift operator for the entire fines circuit, I also oversaw the crushing and screening and dense media separation (DMS) areas when necessary. I was always eager to assist my colleagues in all other sections of the plant when called upon.

My daily duties primarily involved the turn-over of documentary mine searches and mundic block analyses. These activities help facilitate the sale and mortgaging of houses in Cornwall and West Devon. In addition to these duties, I managed and reported on trenching and drilling programs, footings inspections and conducting Phase 1 environmental surveys all across the South West. These activities required me to present myself in a professional manner to clients and other members of the public and explain processes and outcomes in a simple, understandable fashion. I also engaged in numerous networking events to promote the company beyond its current client user base. As part of my desire to encourage business growth I fostered ideas, such as digitization of the company archive, that would help the business stay relevant and competitive and insuring all company assets are accessible and safeguarded for the future.

My typical duties include preparing samples for further analysis and the accurate and organised entry of data into the Company database. I have been trained in the safe and efficient use of common comminution equipment and their relevant pros and cons for a range of sample variables. Due to the hazardous nature of the machinery and the inherent dangers of a busy lab environment, I am required to stay focused and vigilant for extended periods of time, delegate jobs if necessary and provide progress reports to superiors and clients. Working with a variety of commodity and sample types, for our clients, has honed many of my expertise, e.g. time management, data recording, communication and managerial skills.

Whilst at Dalradian, I was part of a large exploration team. Key responsibilities included preparing diamond drill core to be logged, collecting a number of geotechnical readings such as magnetic and spectrographic data, and cutting of the core. In early 2013, I was directly involved in the Company’s soil sampling program in the area around the known deposit. This involved collecting over 1,000 soil samples, related database entry and preparing the samples for dispatch.

I was employed by Gold Fields Arctic Platinum Oy. on a two month contract. I was asked to evaluate the iron alteration and its effects on mineralogy of the Vaaralampi Cu-Ni-PGE deposit as a basis for my Master’s dissertation. My initial goal was to devise an ore processing strategy based on the knowledge gained on site and further research. Ultimately this project was successful as the Company requested Datamine wireframe files and the final report for further use in their exploration program.

Reporting primarily to the Senior Geologist, I worked as the only Junior Geologist at the operating Cavanacaw gold mine. I implemented a standardised logging procedure and guidelines for the Company, to accurately record features and mineralisation within the core. I was responsible for collecting daily grade control samples and investigation of ore zones in the secondary pit to assess its potential. Sample dispatches and QA/QC checks were also a part of regular duties. My integral role in the exploration program meant I was occasionally required to train new Junior Geologists entering the Company.
