I am an experienced software engineer. I’m an inventor, problem solver and manager:- As an inventor, my goal is to design and create beautiful and useful digital products that enrich people’s lives.- As a problem solver, I see obstacles as an opportunity to learn and innovate.- As a manager, I am uniquely able to see both big picture and the details while keeping a human touch.I create a collaborative and supportive environment wherever I work as I look for the best in others and amplify their strengths. I’ve lead teams of 3 to 13, supporting junior developers because I’m able to listen, engage and laugh. I’m grateful for the talented people I’ve worked with over the years. I don’t just think out of the box: even the concept of a box is restrictive for creativity. The glass is always overflowing! I enjoy meeting new people with different perspectives, ideas, experiences. I once designed a team-building escape room with lasers, Lego and a locked mobile device tailored to my team’s unique interests. I enjoy the synergy of a motivated team.Building trust is paramount to a healthy business and happy customers. Over the last 20 years of my career I’ve been active in projects from single-page websites for wonderful small family businesses all the way up to multi-million dollar software products for large global enterprises. I have been integral to all project development phases and throughout the entire software stack from user interfaces, Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs), server and cloud frameworks, databases and low-level embedded systems. I find work rewarding when I see the impact my inventions make to people using them. A well-designed and well-executed digital tool can literally be life-changing for the people who need it.New products often require a rigorous process of problem solving, from inception, development and testing to deployment and marketing. Fortunately, I love a challenge and thrive under pressure. I bring creativity and a broad spectrum of experience to engineering dilemmas. My communication and leadership skills help me to harness other peoples’ solutions as well. It’s such a buzz when you finally get passed the next hurdle and see a product you’re passionately developing coming to life and making a difference!I enjoy photography, cooking, gardening, DIY, people and places, music, walking, and spending time with my family and friends. Born and raised in Edinburgh, UK and now living in York, UK I feel privileged to call these two beautiful cities my home. Please feel free to connect with me via LinkedIn.

Software Development Lead & Senior Software EngineerCriticalblue Jan 2016 - Jul 2018Edinburgh, Scotland, United KingdomLed the software development team for CriticalBlue’s Approov SaaS Mobile API Protection Solution. Our team received multiple internationally-recognised awards. Agile-based software management with separate server, mobile and cloud infrastructure components. Extensive research into API and mobile device cybersecurity. Responsibilities included overseeing comprehensive team-wide design phase, organising project development stages while liaising with product stakeholders, mentoring junior engineers, organising team-building activities involving Lego and lasers, and taking an active role in development of the software tool. Primarily responsible for development of the native iOS Objective-C and Swift framework library used to authenticate iOS mobile app runtime code with the Approov server backend. The role involved frequent communication with and support of the application engineering team to support customer API architectures and requirements. Penetration testing of multiple Android and iOS mobile apps and associated server APIs to understand weaknesses due to API key exposure, insecure TLS/SSL practices, and vulnerable API design (it’s okay, I wear a white hat).I thoroughly enjoyed working at CriticalBlue with the fantastic team there on many amazing products with a variety of great worldwide customers, but decided in 2018 to move onto working freelance full time for a web and mobile app development company which I joint-founded. -
Senior Software Engineer & Project ManagerCriticalblue Jan 2009 - Dec 2015Edinburgh, Scotland, United KingdomWorked as part of the core software engineering team for CriticalBlue’s Prism product, an invaluable tool which performs static analysis of software and dynamically traces in-memory code to analyse and identify bottlenecks and aid in the parallelisation of sequential software for use in newer multicore platforms. Our team received multiple internationally-recognised awards. Programming languages included Java, C, C++ and assembly. Heavily involved with customer relationships in EU, US and Asia once the product was initially built to ensure ongoing support and attraction to new businesses.Worked as part of a small sub-contracted team for a major mobile network hardware vendor to develop a prototype IDE tool for analysing performance bottlenecks in network management software in terms of processor instruction and data caches and pipeline usage. The tool performs static and dynamic analysis of the network software in order to highlight performance bottlenecks in code, and permits extensive refactoring of the embedded C code while processing the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) to automatically generate an optimised version of the code.Led a small global team of software engineers who were sub-contracted to optimise the performance and address stability issues of a major vendor’s Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) used in payment processing and secure token generation. The project required close collaboration with the product vendor team to understand the evolution of the embedded software and end user requirements. As well as successfully addressing the various stability issues in the system, our team was able to greatly optimise overall throughput which directly led to increased revenue for the vendor and a great customer success story and long-term relationship with both engineering companies. -
Software Engineer & Ui/Ux DeveloperCriticalblue Dec 2004 - Dec 2008Edinburgh, Scotland, United KingdomWorked as part of the core software engineering team for CriticalBlue’s Cascade product, a bespoke Embedded Software Optimisation and Co-Processor Synthesis Tool for ARM, MIPS, Intel, Cavium, Freescale, TI, Renesas and other SoCs. Main responsibilities involved developing and maintaining the cross-platform Eclipse-based Cascade IDE and integration with multiple software services associated with the product. Programming languages included Java, C and assembly. Also responsible for improving UI/UX design based on customer feedback and delivering rapid bespoke add-on solutions and fixes as required by new customer use cases. Further extended the IDE for showcase prototypes as part of global product marketing. -
