About 🦩Simon Smallchua

I got my first taste for business at age nine, when I started growing and selling apricots in my backyard. Though my career as an apricot farmer was short-lived, I took a liking to coding in highschool and helped build a website for my breakdancing studio (yes, really!) At 19, I started my own digital agency, helping small businesses set up their brand and digital marketing, and grew to a team of 10 with 130 clients. I sold the company in my 20s and joined Melbourne based agency Isobar as a marketing strategist. Over eight years, I helped build the agency’s capabilities in analytics, social and experience design, and helped grow the team from 60 people to 350. Making the jump from agency to client side, I most recently headed up a global marketing team for a high-growth software and data company (yes, I get excited by data), where I spent my days growing their US customer base.Shortly after the launch of Harvey, I joined my wife full-time to help take on new clients with incredible ideas and ambition to make positive change. I was excited to bring my 16 years of experience to help Harvey grow.Across my career, I’m most proud of the people I’ve been able to work with, from inspiring colleagues to the people behind conscious organisations like ATEC, who are making Cambodian farming more sustainable. I didn't take the traditional path, swapping uni for starting a business, but I've had the honour of being named Australia's 30under30 (B&T), Asia's 40under40 (CampaignAsia), presenting at TED in Brasil and has been published over 20 times in local and international industry journals.

    Co-Founder
The Business Pickle Dec 2020 - Present

Profit and impact go hand in hand and a better future for all - but achieving this is quite the pickle. We understand there are trade offs and in that lies infinite possibilities for assessment, judgement and good hefty debate.‍ But how do we navigate these challenges? How do we know where to draw the line, spend our money and what harm are we doing by just standing by?

Plenty of beauty brands claim to be ethical. But here at Kester Black, sustainability and social justice aren’t just glossy marketing buzzwords. They’re the driving force behind our good-weird kind of beauty company: the kind that’s certified carbon neutral, that donates 2% of all revenue to social causes, and that makes vegan and sustainable products that are both all class, and all conscience. Ultimately, they’re what fires and fuels us with enthusiasm – the original renewable energy.

As a result the quality of our client roster has lifted, client retention has improved and pride in working for Isobar has raised.Digital Transformation conference (summitseries.com.au - CAN, MEL, SYD)We unearthed the realities and lessons learnt in transitioning to a digital economy by curating a conference of local and international speakers including Thankyou (water), ANZ, Broadsheet and Twitter. The conference led to 14 new briefs, delivering 3 projects that realised a 350% ROI on the conference, and included our most internationally recognised piece of work to date. Staff engagement programTo bring the growing staff size into the focus of leadership and create actionable insights I established an engagement program consisting of a quarterly survey, workshops around core drivers of engagement, results presentations to the team, and action planning with each department. This saw us achieve a turn around in engagement from 62% to 78% in 18 months.Values engagement programWork culture is a central part of Isobar's success and going through such growth required us to deliver a values engagement program to maintain and build that culture and staff engagement. Through monthly recognition programs, facilitated workshops and in 2015 a major review and relaunch of our values we have now established an even stronger culture. Show less
