Volunteer Visitor Guide
Transport Planner
I was regrettably made redundant at Dairy Crest in April 2009, and started my current job in July 2009, working as a Transport Planner for GEFCO UK at their flagship ILI warehouse in Coventry, currently working on the Nintendo and 2 Wheel Contracts. My job consists of receiving orders and adding them onto a personally designed transport plan, then liaising with our transport department to arrange for drivers and vehicles for the appropriate loads. I also have to liaise with our clients and their clients, with respect of the loads, and the security aspect of the products being delivered.
Transport Cover Clerk
Fleet Operations Clerk
In April 2005, I was then seconded onto the Fleet Department of Dairy Crest Nuneaton, where the position became permanent. This position involves maintaining legal compliance in relation to EU Operator Licensing regulations and managing a fleet of fifty nine, 44 tonne tractor units, eighty tri-axle refrigerated trailers and a couple of small refrigerated vehicles. Day-to-day activities include managing and co-coordinating safety inspections and MOT tests, with the associated capture of legal documentation, defect and breakdown rectification and the resourcing of additional equipment for busy operational periods. I am also responsible for managing our service providers to insure that downtime and cost is kept to a minimum, whether the equipment is onsite, in the workshop or roadside, using key performance indicators. Over the three years in the position, I have built an excellent rapport with the service providers that we use, be it body shops, garages and rental companies, at both local and national level. With this rapport and experience, I have been able to negotiate, on occasions, lower costs for the company, especially with damage repairs. As part of my day-to-day tasks, I have to use several computer programmes, that I am fully conversant with, including Microsoft Excel, Word and Access. I also use programmes, designed especially for Dairy Crest, including Drive 7 (a fleet management programme), POMS (Purchase Order Management System), WMS (Warehouse Management System) and the Daily Dispatch Schedule (Access Database).
Acting Transport Supervisor
Once I passed my national, I decided to study for the international case study, and with that, the management team promoted me to Senior Transport Clerk, and then onto Acting Shift Supervisor, in charge, at grass roots level of anywhere up to 90 drivers and office staff, who I built, and still sustain a significant relationship with.
Senior Transport Clerk
With plenty of willing to advance within the company, I decided to take my CPC National Haulage Certificate, with the hope of a transfer. I took the exam in the December of 2002, and transferred to the transport department in the January of 2003. At the end of January, I received my results and certificate, and continued to progress in the department.
Transport Clerk
Gatehouse Operative
From the start of 2002, I had been working for Dairy Crest at their National Distribution Centre in Nuneaton, where I started as an agency Gatehouse/Security Operative, and progressed to becoming a full time employee with the company, booking vehicles in, carrying out site patrols, answering the switchboard out of hours, and carrying out searches. After doing several cover shifts in the transport department through the year and that I thrive a good challenge, I enquired about a transfer into transport on a permanent basis.
