I founded Headline FD to provide flexible finance director services to a longstanding portfolio of clients. Each of our FDs works with boards of directors, stakeholders, senior management and funders as a strong and reliable FD. I have nearly 30 years' experience at FD level and have been a portfolio FD since 2003.My specialist sectors include not-for-profit, healthcare, property, energy, professional services, high net worth individuals and investment companies.I have been FD of Main Market listed companies, AIM-quoted companies, chairman of a group of care homes, adviser to wealthy individuals and their portfolios of companies, and I enjoy building a portfolio of clients.I headline each assignment, either undertaking the role myself in full or involving one of my team of accomplished FDs if their complementary skills are more suited to the role.

For those clients with a permanent finance director, Headline FD represents an overspill during busy periods or for specific transactions.Simon headlines each project, undertaking all the work for certain clients but involving his team of specialist FDs when their skills are better suited to the task. Clients don’t have to commit to a minimum period of time; the work is on an as-needed basis, usually charged at an hourly rate.Business planning, financial modelling such as three- or five-year Excel forecasting, cashflow generation, board reports, valuations, structuring deals and fundraising are all covered. The work is unlike the role undertaken by a mainstream firm of accountants, who would primarily deal with compliance work on tax and accounts preparation. The team at Headline FD get involved in the day-to-day financial strategy at each client; we manage each client’s growth and their financial planning. Where clients’ auditors are precluded by ethical guidelines from getting involved in certain projects, Headline FD takes on the work which needs to be done by a third party.Most clients are owner-managed, but there’s an appetite to work with private equity-backed companies too, and AIM is an arena in which Headline FD has particular experience. Most of our clients are financially sound, but we get contacted by companies for whom a strong FD on a pay-as-you-go basis is useful when cash constraints mean they can’t attract an FD from employment elsewhere. So helping turnarounds in challenging trading circumstances is another string to our bow.
