About Simran Sethi
I aim to serve as a JAG Officer in the United States Army. My areas of interest are heavily geared toward both military criminal law and civilian criminal law. The profound responsibility to provide legal counsel, prosecute, and defend matters of military law resonates with my strong sense of duty and desire to make a meaningful impact. I’m also very interested in learning more about the trial process, from the perspectives of prosecutors, defense attorneys, and their clients. I plan to start working in criminal investigations, attend law school, and then ultimately transition to practice criminal law in the military. I’ve always been very passionate about learning how the criminal justice system works regarding the reasoning and history behind laws being created, for what purpose, and being upheld by what moral and ethical standards. I also find the push for reforming outdated laws vital because it signifies the impacts of societal change and the development of contemporary perceptions of morality. Being a JAG officer would not only allow me to utilize my legal expertise to ensure the well-being and cohesion of our armed forces, but it would also enable me to contribute directly to the preservation of justice, freedom, and the ideals upon which our nation was founded.

Intern
-This was a very unique opportunity I received to gain Platoon Leader experience before commissioning as an Army Officer. -I received follow-on orders after my training in Fort Knox, KY, to go to Germany where I was able to shadow lieutenants in combat arms branches, and I was also able to shadow several JAG officers, two in prosecution and the others in defense. -I was able to sit in on two separation board hearings and one court-martial.-I learned a lot about laws that are exclusive to service members and about some international law, particularly when it comes to who has jurisdiction if a crime is committed by a soldier in Germany and how that legal process works. -During the hearings and court-martial, I was able to reference the UCMJ when it came to specific laws in the military I was unsure about, which provided an excellent learning experience for me.
Intern
-I worked directly with Mr. Lesniak and his paralegal who I aided with various tasks around the office and in the Court of Common Pleas.-I followed ongoing cases that allowed me to study and research a plethora of specific laws and statutes in the state of Pennsylvania, and I was able to watch Mr. Lesniak litigate those same cases in court. -I was able to sit in on a few of Mr. Lesniak’s meetings with his clients, with their permission, and I learned a lot about the relationship between an attorney and their clients, particularly the interpersonal skills Mr. Lesniak has which makes him an exceptionally respectable attorney that his clients feel comfortable around and trust. -I was on my feet for a good portion of this internship, going back and forth between Mr. Lesniak’s office and the courthouse to deliver and transport files and paperwork that I was also able to fill out and familiarize myself with. -Mr. Lesniak’s paralegal was also very helpful in broadening my range of legal terminology and allowing me to gain paralegal experience by shadowing him and giving me hands-on experience.
Intern
-I worked with multiple detectives on a variety of ongoing cases in College Station, TX.- My responsibilities included thoroughly analyzing video surveillance footage from establishments where typically a theft or assault had occurred to send out a notice to the department to identify the suspect(s) and to find any other notable evidence. -I also assessed video footage recovered from police officers’ and detectives’ body cams and came up with datasheets that included pertinent information about victims, witnesses, and suspects along with significant timestamps that can be presented as evidence in the trial. -I occasionally drove a police van to retrieve evidence e.g. surveillance footage, stolen items, etc. from an establishment, or to write up and deliver a video request form to an establishment where surveillance footage was requested by the police department for a case.
Intern
-I worked directly with Mr. Natoli on ongoing criminal cases, this time on the defense side.-I came up with defenses after reading the affidavit reports, looking at the evidence, and examining each case file. -I was also introduced to case law, which had me look at other similar cases to the ones I was working on which set the precedent; prior cases and their outcomes could be used as a defense.-I viewed surveillance footage, interrogations, and other videos that contained potential evidence to extract clips that could be used in favor of the defendant. -I was able to ask a lot of law or case-related questions to Mr. Natoli directly which was extremely helpful and resulted in a very effective learning experience for me.
Intern
**Internship cut short due to COVID-19-Personal Injury Law-For the short time I worked at this firm, I helped mail out important documents to attorneys, and I was also responsible for getting medical records and billing statements sent over to the firm regarding a client’s civil case. -I learned more about tort law in regards to intentional torts, negligence, and strict liability, and was able to read up on cases that had to do with all three of these categories.
Intern
-The job entailed aiding prosecutors by helping them prepare for trial and in the process I was able to learn a lot about the criminal processing in the state of Pennsylvania. I was interning with the Trial Team Secretary.-Actively following ongoing criminal cases/asking prosecutors questions regarding the cases they are working on-Most cases I was following were homicide cases and cases handled by the special victims unit as well as a few domestic violence, aggravated assault, and drug cases. -Creating and mailing out subpoenas, disposition forms, etc. to police officers/witnesses-Transporting case files to prosecutors as needed in court -Observing Gagnon hearings and speaking one-on-one with the judge who creates the sentences for these types of hearings -Sending the defense attorneys discoveries (copies of the criminal case files)
