About Siobhan Carroll

Have you ever wondered what the users are thinking?Me too. All the time! Good news: I usually know how to figure it out. My years as a counselor taught me how to connect with people by building rapport with empathy. An interview is a door to the user's world. Usability tests are chats with new friends. And, I believe, good UX research is studying humans one conversation at a time. I've conducted almost 2000 interviews in my career, and I've learned to listen deeply. I hear what is said, and I also see what is unsaid but acted upon. I observe and analyze, and can often find meaning and insights even when they are hidden from the users themselves.Springboard's UX/UI design bootcamp taught me UX skills and methods. My career as a counselor and teacher taught me how to keep the user at the center of the process and how to communicate with stakeholders.I'm seeking remote work in UX research in the non-profit, ed-tech and game fields. Still wondering what the users are thinking? I'd be delighted to find out for you.

Listed skills include Leadership, Survey Design, Writing, Presentation Skills, and 54 others.

A teacher designs. She plans, executes and performs. Data-collection is her every day. She also communicates and inspires through storytelling. She builds community with empathy. Leading, guiding, teamwork, flexibility, good humor, the ability to think on her feet, deep analysis...name a quality you want in an employee, and a good teacher has it in spades. I'm a great teacher, and I'm teaching in a pandemic. Quite frankly, I can do anything.

Relationships are at the heart of counseling. For 13 years, I bonded with people for a living. I warmed up reluctant teens who were failing their classes, listened with an open heart to their angry parents venting, and repeated silly inside jokes with anxious students to help them calm down. Almost 2000 interviews taught me how to ask questions and, more importantly, how to hear the answers. It sounds simple. It is-most definitely-not. Until I was called back into the classroom because of the Covid-19 pandemic, my duties included case management of students with 504 educational plans, counseling students in distress, helping students, teachers and families cope with educational and behavioral difficulties, and working empathically one on one with students to deal with peer, family and social-emotional issues. In other words, my job was to put the user (in this case, the student) first.User research is doing all of these things in a slightly different context, but the skills remain the same. Never.Starting in January, 2023, I began researching the best ways to teach about different aspects of UX research. I mapped out and created the curriculum for two of Avocademy's Design Master Classes: Usability Testing and Interviewing for UX Designers. Why is a researcher the best person to create a curriculum? Because whatever I don't know, I research. By synthesizing my own experiences in interviewing and usability testing and curating a library of supporting resources, I developed a vision for what my students would learn. Then, I planned my curriculum step by step, and built it, one idea at a time. Why is a teacher the best person to teach a Master Class? I mean, this one's pretty obvious, right? The next step was to create and edit scores of hours of videos of myself teaching these UX research concepts. In my lessons, I presented skills, methods and concepts, and led student learning activities for new and veteran UX designers. As an experienced teacher, I know how to present ideas with humor, interest and care for my students. And I did.My Design Master Classes allow UX designers to refine their craft with important UX research skills, boost their empathy and guide their product designs and iterations ever closer to the needs of their users. Some say that those who don't know, teach. But if you're a TEACHER AND A RESEARCHER, what you don't know, you research, you learn and then you teach better than anyone! Show less

Compare what we do to what other companies in our field do, and tell us the smartest way to sell our product in your country."Over a 12-month contract through Avenue Code, I conducted research for a Brazilian company to help launch its product in North America. I collaborated with UX writers, designers and developers to create the best digital products for the US market. I told compelling stories with my findings and insights to groups of stakeholders, some who were experts and some with limited English, in a way that enlightened and entertained them all. In short, I wowed them. Why? Because for six hours a day I'm competing with i-phones for teenagers' attention. I have to put on a show to even be noticed. To be a good teacher, I need to actually delight my students. And I do. I'm hilarious, energetic and extremely engaging in class. I tell thrilling stories like it's my job. (It is!) I draw people in. Facilitating this creative process requires a great deal of coordination, preparation and know-how, plus the soft skills of listening, helping all to feel welcome and heard, understanding and honoring the personalities present, reading the room (or the Zoom), guiding and nudging participants, eliciting reactions and votes, and synthesizing disparate ideas into a usable prototype. It's a delicate and exhausting process. Now, try doing it in a foreign language. While translating shared written documents on the fly. And interpreting the speech of the meeting into English as you go.Facilitating design sprints in French and English with Code for Canada has been the most difficult and the most thrilling accomplishment of my UX career. Our small design team partnered with several organizations to create two innovative digital products. Along with leading the design sprints, I did research ops: spearheading communication with numerous stakeholders, coordinating meetings and recruiting users. On the UX research side, I interviewed users, ran usability tests, made experience maps and proto-personas, analyzed and presented insights gleaned from my research, documented our design team's work and accomplishments and set the stage for development of these user-centered products.C'était très difficile, mais je suis fière du résultat. I was a teacher of high school and middle school students French and ESL. I took my job of teaching them to communicate very seriously. Though my students would describe me as entertaining, warm and hilarious, they knew that I cared about them because I listened to them. Later, I would go on to listen for a living. But I started learning those important skills in the classroom
