Until I was called back into the classroom because of the Covid-19 pandemic, my duties included case management of students with 504 educational plans, counseling students in distress, helping students, teachers and families cope with educational and behavioral difficulties, and working empathically one on one with students to deal with peer, family and social-emotional issues.In other words, my job was to put the user (in this case, the student) first.User research is doing all of these things in a slightly different context, but the skills remain the same. By synthesizing my own experiences in interviewing and usability testing and curating a library of supporting resources, I developed a vision for what my students would learn. Then, I planned my curriculum step by step, and built it, one idea at a time. Why is a teacher the best person to teach a Master Class? I mean, this one's pretty obvious, right?The next step was to create and edit scores of hours of videos of myself teaching these UX research concepts. In my lessons, I presented skills, methods and concepts, and led student learning activities for new and veteran UX designers. As an experienced teacher, I know how to present ideas with humor, interest and care for my students. I collaborated with UX writers, designers and developers to create the best digital products for the US market. I told compelling stories with my findings and insights to groups of stakeholders, some who were experts and some with limited English, in a way that enlightened and entertained them all. In short, I wowed them.Why? Because for six hours a day I'm competing with i-phones for teenagers' attention. I have to put on a show to even be noticed. To be a good teacher, I need to actually delight my students. And I do. I'm hilarious, energetic and extremely engaging in class. I tell thrilling stories like it's my job. (It is!) I draw people in. And interpreting the speech of the meeting into English as you go.Facilitating design sprints in French and English with Code for Canada has been the most difficult and the most thrilling accomplishment of my UX career. Our small design team partnered with several organizations to create two innovative digital products. Along with leading the design sprints, I did research ops: spearheading communication with numerous stakeholders, coordinating meetings and recruiting users.
